AVIF Image Upload Error

Post by rikaryo » Sat Mar 15, 2025 4:03 pm

Hello Joomla friends,

I'm having an issue with uploading AVIF images. I generate them externally, but when I try to upload them, I get an error saying the image format is not supported.

What intrigues me is that this happens on a site built with Joomla 5.0, which is updated to version 5.2.5, while another site I created with Joomla 5.2.x accepts AVIF uploads without any issues.

I checked the media manager settings and added the AVIF format to all the options where WEBP and JPG were listed. I also cleared the cache, but even after that, AVIF uploads still don’t work.

Error. Unable to upload file.
Error: Prohibited MIME type detected: image/avif

Has anyone experienced this issue before and found a solution?

Thanks!

Not an answer to your question! I have never used avif so downloaded an example from the internet and uploaded into one of my local test sites via the media component. That worked fine. I did not need to alter any of my media settings.

I cannot find "Prohibited MIME" anywhere in the Joomla code so I wonder if the error message is coming from PHP. Perhaps your problem site does not have a required extension installed (gd?). Or you may have a mod_security rule blocking upload.

Ceford, thank you for your attention. Earlier this evening here in Brazil, I managed to resolve the issue. I added the image type MIME (image/avif) in the site settings, but it still gave an error. Then, I accessed the database and, within the images table, I found a sequence of image types. I added AVIF to it, and it worked. I believe it was a communication error between the image settings and the database table, possibly caused during one of the upgrades. Anyway, I solved it—thank you very much!

images table
Do you mean the the com_media record in the __extensions table? The params field there is where the content of the media options values are stored. That is one of two places in my database that I find avif, the other being in the #__actions_logs table recording my test image upload.

Anyway, good to here your problem is fixed.
