Has Joomla 5 performance improved over J4?

Post by komir » Wed Nov 01, 2023 9:58 am

Hi everyone, I'm so happy to be the first one to post in this category 🏅
Maybe I should buy a ticket and see if my luck continues

Now real, I'm curious to know if anyone has migrated to J5 and noticed a significant difference in speed between the two versions. I'm considering upgrading my project, but I want to make sure it's worth the effort.
Does J5 offer any noticeable performance improvements over J4?

Thank You All

With an up-to-date and current server environment there should well be improvement - whether it is actually noticeable is another story.

Try an experiment:

Set up a default install of J4 and a separate default install of J5. If possible, set each one for their minimum system requirements; measure the site load time with GTMextrix or similar. Note the load time differences between J4 and J5. Repeat the test using the recommended requirements for each.

Repeat the test with your own site (make a test copy, run GTMextrix on the J4 site, then migrate to J5 and run GTMetrix again)

As always, site load times depend on many factors - whether it's shared or VPS or stand-alone hosting, the amount of traffic on the site, a user's internet connection and so on.

I have two J! test sites—almost identical—for J! 4.4.0 and J! 5.0.0 on a commercially-hosted server. I ran the GTMetrix tests several times for each website. The results were inconclusive whether one site "outperformed" another.

Both sites ran with a "GTMetrix grade A", with performances ranging from 95-97% and structure of 90%.

These tests do not indicate anything of importance to me. Both J! 4.x and J! 5.x "feel" as if they run faster than J! 3.x but that's only a subjective feeling (I ran out of free GTMetrix analyses so I couldn't run an analysis for a site built with J! 3.10.12). Performance-wise, nothing especially noticeable.

To add a bit more to this discussion, I ran one test on a J! 3.x website (that's similar to the J! 4.x and J! 5.x sites) and, for what it's worth, GTMetrix grade C": performance 73% and structure of 82%.

Hi @komir. I do not think that J5 has any significant improvements in performance compared to J4. And in fact, this does not matter, since any improvements from the box will be leveled by how you create the site.

Work on performance begins with the first block, which you add to the site and the whole in your hands. A good webmaster will make a J3 site with the best performance indicators than a bad webmaster with J4 or J5

Hi @komir,

Just wanted to share that the home page of the default instalation of Joomla 5 on a optimized Nginx server (no OpenLiteSpeed) has the following page score on lighthouse:
Performance: 98 , Accessibility: 100 , Best Practices: 100 , SEO: 92

We went with the free version of JCH OPtimize for this test.
