No confirmation email after registering as a new user?

Hi all, for testing reasons I registered myself as a new user (providing my gmail-address) on the front-end of my Joomla5-website. A message popped up that a mail had been sent to me to confirm my registration but NO mail whatsoever comes through (and yes, not even in my spam folder) !??? What am I missing here? Any suggestions? As a side note : I did receive a mail in my role of superuser that a new user registered on my site.

Welcome to Joomla forum!
Is your super user email address also a gmail address? Or another email provider?

What "mailer" do you use in Joomla's Global Configuration?
See: System > Global Configuration > [Server] tab > "Mail" > "Mailer".

These days SMTP is the most reliable,
but only if you've configured SPF + DKIM records in the DNS.
Gmail checks those SPF + DKIM records at your DNS to test if the mail is legitimate or spam.

Thanks Peter for your swift reply. My super user mail is a protonmail address. Since apparently I can't use SMTP for Protonmail (only in paid versions) I've set up a outlook.com mail account and changed my super mail to that mail account. However now the SMTP-settings provided from Microsoft for Outlook.com gave me a SMTP server error while sending test mail... I'm quite confused right now. I redid a new user registration with my proton mail address this time but now, after submitting, I get to see the error 'could not instantiate mail function'... I give up... Thanks for your time and effort.

at least we know the site is sending email - you say you received the notification tot he super user.

Make sure all the SMTP details are correct - the port number,the user name, the password and server name. Some email services may work well with Joomla others may not.

Can you create email addresses in your web hosting account? That may be the best option? You could then set up a message-forward rule to your actual email you want to use.

Update : I've created a new (test) mail account on Yahoo.com and registered myself as a new user on the front-end of my site and, lo and behold, I've received the registration mail with the link to activate my account in my new Yahoo-mail !!! Conclusion : Joomla doesn't like Gmail and Protonmail... ???

I do not know about Protonmail but Gmail is unlikely to cause the problem. A lot depends on how the forwarding mail server has been set up, as @pe7er pointed out earlier.

If you have a Gmail account and your host allows the web server to connect to an external SMTP server, it is possible to use Gmail as the SMTP server to forward the emails from Joomla. Just follow the instructions in this Joomla tutorial: How do I use Gmail as my mail server?

If any issues happen to come up, follow the instructions in another Joomla tutorial to troubleshoot the connection: How to debug SMTP mail in Joomla 4.

There was a problem some years ago when gmail wasn't accepting emails that had a different reply field and reply to field. gmail has been a problem for some time.

That was some years ago. Joomla 4 and Joomla 5 send 'Reply To Name' and 'Reply To Email' as part of the header of the email message. I have not seen the Gmail SMTP server bounce any test emails where the Reply-To info in the header is different from the sender's email address stored in the Return-Path field of the header.
