Joomla 5.0.2. and MySQL 5.7.23

Post by Albyon85 » Fri Jan 26, 2024 5:55 pm

In my shared server i have MySQL 5.7.23-23

I was trying to install Joomla 5.0.2.
I create a database for it but the installation procedure say me:

You must have MySQL version 8.0.13 or higher to continue the installation.
Your version is: 5.7.23-23

The support contacted told me that with MySQL version 5.7.23-23 that is on the server it is only possible to install Joomla 4 :(

but in the same server i have installed another Joomla via Softaculous Apps Installer and installed me seamlessly Joomla version 5.0.2. ...

How is it possible?

Softaculous doesn't look at requirements it assumes you know what you are doing. No body here would recommend using softaculous on a live site . You will notice that you are unable to update j5 via Joomla update with the softaculous install. Much better not to use it for your sanity.

That is, you tell me that the software installation system of Softaculous doesn't care about the limitation of the server's MySQL and manages to install it anyway without error messages?

Maybe the Joomla Version 5.0.2. so installed won't work well?

It installed it and works until it doesn't

Exactly this.

There will be parts of it that won't function or will "barf" when you try to use it and you will not be able to update it. Extension installs may fail too.

i also know Joomla quite well, i have also used it for several jobs since its first release, many years ago.
It's just that i haven't used it for a long time.
Generally use Softaculous for on-the-fly installations, just to do quick tests of some features, i know how to install such software

The fact that Softalicious installs without checking hosting environment/tech requirements should set alarm-bells ringing. You should really raise it with them; it's their product after all.

Download the "official" package and use that.

Joomla 5 - MySQL 5.7.23-23

Post by Albyon85 » Mon Jan 29, 2024 9:23 am

In my shared server I have MySQL 5.7.23-23
Trying to install Joomla 5.0.2. directly (created database and file upload), the installation procedure tells me:
You must have MySQL version 8.0.13 or higher to continue the installation. Your version is: 5.7.23-23
The host support contacted told me that with the MySQL version 5.7.23-23 that is on the server it is only possible to install Joomla 4.

But on the same server I installed another copy of Joomla via Softaculous apps installer and I installed myself Joomla version 5.0.2. without giving any error message.

Why did Softaculous bypass the minimum limitation of MySQL?
How is that possible?
Maybe the installed version of Joomla 5.0.2. may have malfunctions?

Softaculous can bypass Joomla's requirement checks. You may run into errors eventually due to DB version. Also update checks may not work properly. Softaculous can automatically update Joomla but not extensions, IIRC.
