Trailing Slash Issue In Joomla 5.1 Canonical

Post by ImperialHawk » Wed Apr 17, 2024 6:00 pm

Hello Support Forum,

I am happy to say that I've successfully updated to Joomla 5.1 on my website. I can see from the release notes that there are some SEO items for the SEF plugin that have been added.
https://www.joomla.org/announcements/re ... -here.html

Specifically this one about the trailing slash.
https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/pull/42702

This works great! However, I am noticing a strange issue with the homepage canonical now. It is still generating a URL to have a trailing slash even though all of the URLs are supposed to not have the trailing slash. For example. If in the SEF plugin you set "enforce URLS without trailing slash" that works for the URLs in subfolders, but not for the domain. So in the browser you will see https://example.com but for the canconical you will see "https://example.com"

Is there a way to fix this? Can this be a bug? If so, how do I report this?

Thank you,
Geoffrey

Have you checked there are no custom rules in your .htaccess file that might be affecting the canonical URL generation? Sometimes custom rules can override Joomla settings.

For your question how to report a potential bug, you can follow guide here https://docs.joomla.org/How_do_you_report_a_bug%3F

Joomla does not create proper canonical. So it doesnt mater slash or not.

Hello!
If anyone is facing this type of problem the easy solution is to clear Joomla and browser caches to resolve potential discrepancies. Then, verify the SEF plugin settings to ensure the 'enforce URLs without trailing slash' option applies correctly. Additionally, disable any third-party SEO extensions to check for possible conflicts. If the issue persists, report the bug on Joomla's Issue Tracker with detailed information for the development team.
