How to connect Joomla 5 to send mail using Office 365

Post by jgkiefer » Sun Apr 28, 2024 12:15 am

I have been at this all day and have been unable to connect Joomla 5 to send mail through office 365. I really need some help with this.
I successfully connected my hosting cpanel to use Office 365 for email. That part is all good.
Now I am unable to setup Joomla to send out mail through Office 365.
I setup Joomla to use SMTP.
Host smtp.office365.com
Port 587
Security - STARTTLS
SMTP Authentication - Yes
Username and password is my Office login username and password.

That didn't work
I then setup a Office 365 connector.
That also didn't work.

When sending out Joomla test mail I receive
Error SMTP Error: Could not authenticate.

I do not know where else to turn for help with this.
I do not understand why this is so difficult.
Thanks for any help offered.

Maybe you need to use Application Specific Password (ASP), similar to the authentication method for smtp.gmail.com.

Ref. How do I use Gmail as my mail server?

Thank you I wish it were that simple.
I've been following this post but could not get it to work.

Since it is an older post I was hoping someone has current info.
I wish there were a plugin for this.

I think you have to tell office to allow Joomla

I have a Joomla 3 site where the admin has successfully used MS365 SMTP for many years - [] However, I am just about to launch their new Joomla 5 site.[/i]

We have been told by the client that they are soon moving their MS365 to use MFA and that the SMTP Username/Password will no longer work on the website.

The client's IT guys have set up a connector and provided the information, which seems to be working.
1 - They suggested that we needed a dedicated/static IP to set up the connector correctly - Which we already had
2 - They set up the connector against the IP & Domain name
3 - Then gave me a new unique SMTP hostname, suggest port 25 and to turn off SMTP authentication as not needed with a connector.

Email: [email protected]
Password: n/a
SMTP Server: mysite-com.mail.protection.outlook.com
Port: 25

I hope this helps - However, I didn't have anything to do with the connector itself. The main point was to disable the SMTP authentication.

Thank you that was very informative. I will get a static IP and give it a try.
