does user - Joomla! plugin store messages?

If I turn off 'notification mail to user' in plugin user - Joomla! I understand no notifications will be sent to the user. But, when I turn that back on - are the emails then sent out or are they gone?

Those emails are not stored. If they are not sent, they are lost.
