504 Gateway Timeout and .htaccess Topic is solved

Hi, I've recently upgraded an old version 3 site to 5.1.0 and PHP 8.1.28. I did this locally using WAMP and tested before uploading to my host. All went well for a few weeks then started getting timeouts on the site with 504 Gateway timeout errors in both the front end and administrator, or very slow performance.

My host has been assisting but is unable to determine the root cause. He made some changes to .htaccess but the problem persisted. If the .htaccess file is removed, the site front page and administator backend load without timing out and both seems responsive, however front end site links don't work (SEF related I guess?) Replacing the .htaccess file works for a while and all links work, but then slows down and starts giving 504 gateway timeout errors again.

Things I have done to try and resolve:
-Remove image gallery banner and other content from front page to reduce load times.
-confirm local WAMP version of site still working correctly
-looked for any large log files that may be being created
-looked for components that may be causing an issue

More info (may be unrelated):
The old v3 site was having problems with phocadownload component not displaying pdf files correctly - was displaying them as garbled ascii contents. As part of the upgrade I removed the component and related plugin, reinstalled a later version, then updated the necessary database tables to restore the indexed files. This worked well on local install and also on the live site, but then the problem reoccured shortly before getting the gateway timeouts.

What is in live $live_site in your configuration.php file? Change its permissions to 644 and then edit it with a text editor - $live_site is normally an empty string.

As suggested by Akeeba Kickstart I set this to blank when running locally via WAMP, but as part of the restore process I set it to the live URL.

I've tried setting it to an empty string as a test as advised.

Your site keeps delivering large images and interacts with external sites - waiting for any one of those could cause a timeout. I think you should review the purpose of your site and run some performance tools - pagespeed.web.dev would be a good start.

Thanks for your help! My host pointed me to some logs that showed it was repeatedly trying to reference a pdf file configured using the phocadownload component, and this was the main cause of the timeout. Once I removed that file it started loading again.

I then took your advice and used that pagespeed.web.dev tool - I wasn't aware of these and it's very useful. I had an image that I had drag n dropped that was being served from an external site which I didn't realise. I've fixed that, resized any images being loaded and it's a big improvement, up from 21 to 41 on their performance metric with more to come.

I am attempting to facade load the [youtube] iframes which should help - I tried a plugin which brought down the whole site and I thought I would have to restore from backup, but I managed to delete the plugin manually. I will try another method for facade loading videos.

I still have another issue to resolve with phocadownload not rendering my pdfs before I'm 100% up and running but your help has saved me, thanks again.
