SMTP Mail settings Microsoft Exchange 365

Post by DAVE-SKYE » Thu Oct 10, 2024 9:20 am

Hello
I had loads of problems getting the SMTP mail system working with Exchange Online.
I eventually got help from a Microsoft tech who showed me what settings are needed.
Below are the settings and steps needed if anyone else is having problems.

Hope this helps!

Sending SMTP email to Office 365

Resolution Steps:

• Ensure SMTP is authenticated for the mailbox
• Ensure legacy TLS is enabled on the tenant
• Create an app password for the user mailbox then use the app password to authenticate the sign in.

Ensure SMTP is authenticated by
• Login to the Microsoft 365 admin center (www.admin.microsoft.com)
• Click on Users>Active users
• Select the user associated with the mailbox
• Click on the Mail tab an click on Manage email apps
• Ensure the Authenticate SMTP option is checked, then click on save.

Turn on legacy TLS by
• Sign in to Exchange admin center (www.admin.exchange.microsoft.com)
• Click on Settings > Mail flow
• Ensure the Turn off SMTP auth for your organization option is not checked and the Turn on use of legacy TLS clients option is checked, click on save.

Turn off security default
• Sign in to identity
• Click on properties
• Ensure the security default is disable

To create an App password for the user
• Login to the Microsoft 365 admin center (www.admin.microsoft.com)
• Click on Users>Active users
• Select the user associated with the mailbox
• Scroll down and click on Manage multifactor authentication
• On the page that opens up, select the user and click on enable (to enable MFA), confirm and save
• Select the user again and click on enforce
• Now sign in as the user on a different browser or incognito window
• On the top right, click on the profile icon of the user
• Click on View account
• Click on Security info> Add sign-in method
• Select App password from the options and click on Add
• Enter a name for the app password and click on Next
• Copy the generated password and keep safe, click Done.

Port for smtp is 587
Server address is smtp.office365.com
To test the smtp: smtper.net (must use the app password to login)
