SMTP - Gmail Less Secure - Can't make a new one anymore
So I trying to figure how to now send out email from my Joomla Site using Google Business email
- As now you can't turn on LESS SECURE APP in the GMAIL ADMIN (Paid email for business) as its getting not supported any more
https://support.google.com/a/answer/6260879?hl=en
So now my question is how do we send out EMAIl with GMAIL?
Just so you know I do have this working on other client website but I have the less secure app (password) working
But with a new client I can't turn this on and can't send out emails via SMTP
My settings are currently
Mailer - SMTP
SMTP HOST - smtp.gmail.com
SMTP PORT - I have tried 465 and 587
SMTP AUTHENTICATION - YES
SMTP USERNAME - put in email
SMPT PASSWORD - I putting in the actual password
When I do a send test it just fails sending the SMTP Error: Could not connect to SMTP host.
So how do we now send?

Assuming this may help : https://docs.joomla.org/How_do_I_use_Gm ... _server%3F taking note of the "App specific password" section towards the bottom which links to https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/18583.
You could always set up an email account within your hosting account (cPanel, or Plesk etc) and use that email address as the "sender" for system emails within the Joomla site.

The link has changed to https://support.google.com/mail/answer/185833?hl=en - the last part starting with ? was new. The link has now been corrected in the Joomla tutorial How do I use Gmail as my mail server?.AMurray wrote: ↑Tue Jan 07, 2025 4:09 am... taking note of the "App specific password" section towards the bottom which links to https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/18583.
Sending emails from Joomla using a app password works all right, especially from localhost sites. Haven't tried the Google Business email, though.

Thanks
I got the Less Secure password to work only via the LINK - to the less secure password page
- But there is no more simple button to click on in the security page
I wonder when Joomla will get the new way to authenticate your gmail account as its all over all of the documentation that Less secure passwords are going away.\
"To continue using an app with your Google Account, you'll need to use a more secure type of access that doesn't share password data. You can: Use OAuth, Switch to an app that offers OAuth, and Create an app password to access these apps"
https://support.google.com/accounts/ans ... 0255?hl=en
Starting January 2025, less secure apps, third-party apps, or devices that have you sign in with only your username and password will no longer be supported for Google Workspace accounts. For exact dates, visit Google Workspace Updates. To continue to use a specific app with your Google Account, you’ll need to use a more secure type of access that doesn’t share password data. Learn how to use Sign in with Google.

Thanks the reply
1. Like i mentioned its not showing any more - as its facing out - I had to use a hard URL to make it work there is no way to click a button (trust me this is how i have been doing it for years)
2. I don't use any client on cPanel email - as then they hold me hostage if I want to move server. And I can't compair to what Google can do for email. As i have clients that have 30 GB x 30 users - I don't have that much space on my VPS.
- But i see where you are going with this - But the 2 MX records won't work and I have to send them out using the Clients email acccount and not a default email - as they will have no clue who it is if its coming from my company email account

Hi,
I'm currently working on a plugin (Gmail SMTP) to address this problem. If you're still interested, I am looking for beta testers to try it out.
Thanks!
