Administrator registration approval email link has stopped working

I have a Joomla 5.2.3 website that has had the new user account activation set to administrator for a few years now and clicking the link in the email that is sent to the administrator once the user has confirmed their email address has always worked until late last year. I think it might have been around the time of the last J! update to 5.2.3. But there was also an Akeeba Admin Tools for Joomla, Aimy Captcha-Less Form Guard, and a couple of Tassos Marinos' extenstions also updated around that time.

What now happens, instead of displaying a notice above the administrator user's profile page that tells me that the user has been enabled and an email has been sent to advise them, it just shows the admin users profile page and on checking in the User administration backend, the user in question is still not enabled.

Has anyone seen this happening to their sites and is there a fix?

If not, what other information can I supply here to help me work out what is causing this behaviour?

BTW, the administrator user is already logged into the front end before clicking the link in the email.

I have gone through the extensions (in extension manager) and disabled those that have dates later than 2024.07.01 on a staging site (copy of live) and the registration link has not worked in all tests.

I noticed that disabling parts of Kunena forums caused 500 errors on the front end. So I uninstalled it completely. No change, still not enabling the user from the email link.

So any ideas how to work out why it no longer works properly would be gratefully received. TIA

This will not be the case. I am using a test email address on my computer to register and confirming the address, then receiving the administrator email, then clicking the link ... all within 5 minutes of the initial registration.

I have copied the link and pasted into browser, as well as simply clicking on the link.

My emails all go through my own VPS and domain name and are not being blocked.

This was working great for a couple of years until the last few months.

Sorry I've been away from computer somewhat.

Still having this problem and still need help tracking down the culprit. Please help, it's driving me mad.

There is an open bug report about this issue: https://issues.joomla.org/tracker/joomla-cms/44732

I tried it on my laptop test site and it all worked normally as expected (but using ‎5.3.0-alpha4-dev).

Checked with a 5.2.3 site and it all works normally for me on localhost.
