Want 1 Child Template - but the function makes more than one.

Post by JimHomyak » Thu May 30, 2024 9:31 pm

So today (May 30, 2024) I put on the J 5.1.1 update and then decided I better make one duplicate template. Why? Because I want to modify my own template (a copy of cassiopeia) and make changes to prevent being overwritten by Joomla update. Okay. Nuff said there.

So after doing one pass of 'create child' template, my backend now has one "Child of Cassiopeia" in styles (expected) but now has two more items in Templates. Expected is one more. It gave me the one I asked for and it gave me a second one (having the name copy of cassiopeia in its style name.) So now I have ID 11, 15, 16 but ID 15 is the one I want to assign to all pages. Except it has the problems of not using a language. It shows me the field CONSTANTS instead of the word. I deleted ID 16 the copy I don't want. I do like the fact that I can put my PHP and CSS and other override files in the child. But I dont know if I should be manually modding the templateDetails.xml.

I do note that the child's templateDetails.xml is vastly different from the original templateDetails.xml in J 5.1.1
Am confused but at least this is all an experiment site that isn't not in production yet. Hopefully by end of summer.

This matter was resolved after realizing that as I was naming the Child Template Name, it was not required to choose anything else in the 'Additional Template Styles' drop-down selector. Operator error!

Doing so is what caused me to have duplicates which I did not know I was even asking for.

(Note: Experimenting is everything in this platform. Do something, change something, edit something and test it every which way, so you can back out or approach things differently as needed.)

See attached. This comes open upon Child Template creation.

I have also had to remake my entire Child a few times to get my naming to be consistent. When entering the Child Template name, I first had entered 'atum_tma' and what Joomla! did was to make 'atum_atum_tma' --- and so at the end of the day, I gave my atum child the only name 'tma' and then Joomla! made it for me as 'atum_tma' (it put in the atum_ underscore for me). I mostly used the Back-End tools for all of this. But I also used my cPanel File Manager to watch what was going on in the templates folders.
