I set the Update Channel to Next but get no update

I am on Joomla! 4.4.5, I set the Update Channel to "Joomla! Next" but it says there is no update available. What am I doing wrong?

Are you trying to update to Joomla 4.4.6? Set Update Channel to "Default".

Are you trying to update to 4.4.6 from 4.4.5, or to 5.x from 4.4.5? If only updating to 4.4.6, then you need the "default" channel. If migrating to 5.x then you need "Joomla Next".

Also, in either case, check the "minimum stability" option (on the same page as where you select the 'channel'). It should be noted as something like "Stable" and not "xxx Beta" or "xxx Release Candidate" (or anything other than "Stable").

The other thing that might prevent the update (4.x to 5.x) from proceeding is a lack of relevant system requirements. From what you have listed in your question, it seems OK.

However to be sure, can you please use the Forum Post Assistant (see the red box at the top of the forum screen under Forum Rules; this script needs to be uploaded to the same folder where Joomla is installed (it is not a Joomla extension).

I do not get the option to update, nbo matter what update channel I select. I tried Next and Development. I do not get the pre-update check option, either

Apart from the already mentioned Session Path, the FPA doesn't appear to present any other issues. I would get the session path resolved and then try again with the minor update (4.4.5 to 4.4.6 first; update channel, Default), then try the 4.4.6 > 5.1.2 migration.

Can you review the error log (as listed in FPA report: Log Errors To: /tmp/php_errors.log)? Report any errors back to the forum; the errors may give further clues as to the failure of the Joomla update from starting or displaying the pre-update check. Perhaps during this process when you try to rerun the update, you could enable Display errors, so they are immediately on screen.

Yes! Me too! I updated a test site to the latest J4 version and updated extensions that use the updater (German language needing an update seemed to be the blocker). I was then offered the Pre-Update Check for Joomla ‎5.1.2. Does that help?

I had something similar a while back.
Trying to skip the last J4 update to go straight to J5.

Joomla next would only show J5 after I had updated to the latest J4 version.
Try updating to J4.4.6 first and then to J5.

That would make sense but the docs don't mention you need to be first on the latest in the 4.4.x version series (just that you need to be running "a version" within the 4.4.x series).

I don't seem to be able to access the Documentation wiki, I wonder if someone could add something to the effect of

Okay, I tested upgrading to J5 from J4.4.5 (skipping 4.4.6).

You have to have the latest version of J4 to be able to upgrade to J5 through the Joomla Updater.
You cannot skip the last J4 update to go straight to J5. Even Joomla Next gives you the latest J4 update first before you can upgrade to J5.

Unlike KEComm I did get an update notice... for J4.4.6.
So this issue of not getting an update notice still stands, right?

Can you update to J4.4.6 using the Default update channel?
What happens when you press Check for updates and/or Reinstall Joomla! core files?

I am on 4.4.6 still no notice. I tried uninstalling German. It says it is the default language despite having changed that. (Yes I double checked Admin and Site!)

I have the same error. I was on 4.4.6 However the system told me that there was no update availeable despite me being on the Joomla Next channel. So I installed the Joomla! 5.1.2 Upgrade Package via 'upload and update'. The result is the above error.

Run a copy of your site locally and see if you can update that to J5.
Use WAMP (often recomended here)/MAMP (Mac)/XAMPP/Laravel Herd, etc.

The advantage of running a copy locally you can test things without destroying the live site:

JCH minimises stuff. Maybe it does too much... I don't know, I have never used it.

Thanks some good hints there. I have actually tried to update a copy of the site.
I tried mysitesguru but get an error message, that there is no update path available.
I made a copy of the site and one after the other uninstalled all third party plugins. To no avail. I just never get the pre-update check. Then I went hardcore and manually uploaded and installed the update package (from 4.4.6 to 5) but then I only get a 503 error on the front as well as on the backend.

Looked into the database a little more. The 'manifest_cache' field of the 'extensions' table is empty for all extensions.
It appears your database is corrupt.

Chasing errors imho is a waste of time. Think 1 - 10 - 100 and rebuild from a fresh J5 (fwiw) is my advice
