How many hours do we need to upgrade from Joomla V3 to Joomla V5

Post by Kotsolis » Fri Jan 10, 2025 11:32 am

I had a website in Joomla V3 latest version with:
- 75.000 registered users (50.000 of them are active, 25.000 are blocked bots).
- A Kunena forum with 17000 forum topics (a total of 248000 posts)
- JomSocial with no activity.
- EasyBlog with around 200 posts.
- JReviews.

I upgraded to Joomla V5. I won't get into details but I want you to tell me how many hours would I need in order to upgrade to Joomla V5? Because I have some issues in calculating the costs with my developer.

Scenario A - Upgrading from Joomla V3 to Joomla V5
Tasks:
1) Creating a subdomain, copying files via file manager, copying database via
phpMyAdmin
2) Removing unnecessary extensions.
3) Trashcan cleanup on the site
4) Automatic update of third-party extensions through the admin area
5) Manual update of paid third-party extensions through the admin area
6) Disabled third-party extensions that will be rewritten
7) Backup
8) Upgrade to Joomla 4.4.4
9) Backup
10) Checking for extension updates under J5 and updating them automatically 3 120
11) Changing server config
12) Upgrade to Joomla 5.1
13) Backup
14) Rewrite extensions of Joomla V3 specifically for Joomla V5 because they don't have any corresponding versions:
(Note: Did they actually rewrite code or those are provided by their developers?
- Plugins: AllVideos (by JoomlaWorks) - use OSTube Instead.
- Plugin Community.
- plugin JComments.
- plugin System
- Plugin System Vertical Menu

How many hours of work do all the above need?

Scenario B - Backup , Clean Install of Joomla V5 and then importing from backup
1) Creating a subdomain
2) Backup
3) Changing server config
4) Installing Joomla V5
5) Importing Users, Kunena Forum backup, JomSocial backup, JReviews articles and JComments.
6) Install around 10-20 components and modules that were previously used in Joomla V3.
7) Rewrite extensions of Joomla V3 specifically for Joomla V5 because they don't have any corresponding versions:
(Note: Did they actually rewrite code or those are provided by their developers?
- Plugins: AllVideos (by JoomlaWorks) - use OSTube Instead.
- Plugin Community.
- plugin JComments.
- plugin System
- Plugin System Vertical Menu

How many hours of work does Scenario B need?

Your feedback and time would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

According to their website, the AllVideos extension from JoomlaWorks is incompatible with J5. This is consistent with the information shown on the JED listing.

JComments is not compatible with J4 or J5. JomSocial is not compatible with J5. JReviews is incompatible with J5. Easyblog is also not compatible with J5.

You will find that many extensions developed for J3 are “dead” as far as J5 is concerned. Rewriting these extensions … is that really an option? Anyway, shouldn’t you be updating your extensions for J3 now?

Scenario B … what are you importing the backup database from? If you’re trying to use a J3 database with J5 it won’t work.

Rough guess to plan, obtain replacement extensions, clean out the trash (e.g. “blocked bots” accumulated redirects records), test, experiment and make adjustments to suit your wishes … two to three weeks; that’s if you work on it full time.

Hi Kotsolis.

Scenario A - may take from two hours to several days. It depends on the local conditions of the server and your old site. In addition, you should take into account whether your J3 template is compatible with J5. If not, it will take extra time to layout the design from scratch - up to one month.

With the exception of 14 - this requires additional time, which can only be evaluated by an experienced developer, completely analyzing the extensions code.

Scenario B - it may take up to one month, taking into account the fact that you will have to make the layout design from scratch.

With the exception of 7 - this requires additional time, which only an experienced developer can evaluate, completely analyzing the extensions code.

If the company provides solutions for 14 and 7, then this is a good company. Very few can provide such services.

You should also take into account the fact that the company may have many clients, so the deadlines described above can increase.

EasyBlog is compatible with Joomla 5 and I see this very new support update for people that need support and fixes for EasyBlog, EasySocial & EasyDiscuss. https://juser.org

Due to the incompatibility of many core extensions for your website it is not possible to migrate your site to Joomla 5.

You should consider building a new website with compatible extensions for your socials environment etc etc (all extensions mentioned before not being available for Joomla 5), Then have a professional support entity like us or anybody else as found in the Joomla Support directory move your Kunena and users to the Joomla 5 platform which requires scripting. The extensions that are not compatible need to be replaced or abandoned if not used effectively
