Manually do an incremental update 5.2.3 to 5.2.5?

Post by neo314 » Sun Mar 16, 2025 2:39 am

My local Laragon server is giving me fits trying to update my local installation from 5.2.3 to 5.2.5. I have a lot of changes already done to a custom component and the live site (without those changes) updated fine.

Whether auto update or by uploading the update file, I get:

Code: Select all

Joomla Update cannot communicate correctly with the administrator/components/com_joomlaupdate/extract.php which performs the update. This typically happens because of one of the following reasons:

The file administrator/components/com_joomlaupdate/update.php, containing the instructions for applying the update, could not be created e.g. because of permissions problems.
The file mentioned above cannot be read by the extract.php script because of permissions problems.
Your browser, network gear or server is corrupting the password we are sending with each request to extract.php for security reasons

Please try using a different browser, without any browser extensions installed, ideally on a different computer connected to the Internet using a different provider. If the error persists you may want to contact your host.
Is it still possible to manually update by replacing the files in the installation with the update package and running a script. I can't seem to find any current directions for doing that.

I got past that problem by deleting the update.php file. Apparently it could not overwrite, but now I get the following error, which I probably got the first time.

Code: Select all

Could not open C:/.../public_html/libraries/vendor/joomla/uri/.drone.jsonnet for writing.
What is odd is that I just did an auto-update on another local server site without a hitch, forced problem site's permissions to match the site that worked, and I get the same error. I also replaced the files from the live site. No luck.

Ownership/permissions issues?

Understood, but I just successfully update another site on the same server with identical permissions. I made sure they matched and tried again. I checked that my temp directories were correct, cleared cache, etc.

It is just weird. There is nothing seemingly special about the files it is failing on. It can clearly write files. Akeeba backup works as do extension updates.

Please run https://forumpostassistant.github.io/docs/ and post it here. It should show if there is an Ownership issue.

I did not see anything except the typical things I would expect for a development environment. UAC is not an issue, so even if there was something different about the Joomla! update process compared to the backup or extension update process, elevated permissions shouldn't be the issue I would think. It says I might be missing deflate, but that does not make sense as being related to the error message I got, and it does in fact, compress and extract without any issues I have seen.

Mod_deflate is an Apache (Server) module that works with Gzip, and allows faster site load times for visitors. It may be beneficial for your site in the long run, but but as you say it is probably not relevant to your reported problem.

It is active on the production server.

So is manually updating no longer a thing? Upload files and run a database script?

Is GWRequests your custom component? The FPA results show also two GW content plugins. Are they compatible with Joomla 5 natively or with the compatibility plugin?

In addition to 'Check for Updates' and running the automatic update, the only other recommended option is downloading the update file and then using the 'Upload and Update' button, as shown at the bottom of the screenshot below.

The gw components are the custom components I am working on. They are being updated for functionality, not compatability and are natively J5.

Upload and update causes the same error.

Just in case, have you tried to disable those custom plugins and/or other third party plugins before the update, to see if that could help?

The error message would not suggest that, but yes I did try that. I also uninstalled a component I was getting rid of and tried disabling JCH as well and clearing cache, browser cache, browser cookies... no joy.

Are you saying you saying you unzipped the update file and uploaded the extracted files over top of the files of the live site?

@neo314, while pending an answer to @webdongle's question, just FYI, the joomla update process takes care of extracting files and making the database changes. I can't recall if there was ever a "manual method" for Joomla core updates. I just remember in Joomla 1.5/2.5 and early 3.x versions, updating the core was done through the Extension Manager. In 3.5.x the Joomla Update component was introduced).

If you can't use the auto-update of the Joomla component, try the "upload and update" method. All you need is the zipped update package (not the full package) from https://downloads.joomla.org/cms/joomla5 for the relevant version you want to update to e.g. download the 5.2.5 package to update from 5.2.3.

Again from Joomla's earlier days, I seem to remember a forum member had written an "update" script to do the database changes in the event a user had to manually upload the core files but that was from the days before the modern Joomla Update component was introduced.

J1.5 was done by using ftp (or the Host's file manager) to upload the unzipped update package. Or, if preferred, the full package without the /installation folder.

It was around 1.6 where it was updated via the extension manager. I can't remember when the update component was created but I do remember helping test it one Easter bank holiday weekend.

For the record, I have tried upload and automatic update. It seems like it has to be a permissions issue that I cannot find.

I recall being able to upload by FTP and run an update script through 2.5 and maybe 3, but it has been a long time. That just was not the preferred method.

No. If I would do it to a test/dev site and if everything was working overwrite a live site with a working version.

FYI, I uploaded the test site to a development subdomain on the production server and it updated without a hitch

The File Path in the Error Message is a mix of Windows and Linux Syntax.

Updating Joomla by using FTP to overwrite an existing website's files has not been a thing since Joomla 1.5.0.

Sometimes users are referring to Upload&Update(in the Joomla update component when they say 'Manually update'

I was specifically referring to overwriting and and running a DB script. In any case, it seems to no longer be a thing. I still can't figure out why this one site on my local machine won't update when others do, but it is updated now by updating on the live server in a development location and then overwriting the local machine.

Correct. Updating Joomla by using FTP to overwrite an existing website's files and running a DB script has not been a thing for more than a decade.

UPDATE: Perhaps this may help someone else in the future.

While writing the updated site back to my local PC server, about 33 files "could not initiate transfer" which included the files that I had identified as being related to the problem. Upon examination, the ownership and permissions were exactly the same. The only difference was that the local files were set to the windows attribute "hidden" (not system or anything, just hidden).

After changing all the files to remove the hidden attribute (and any read only attributes for good measure) the files downloaded. I am pretty sure update will work now, but it is a hassle to test that because site is already updated.

When did Joomla start to use hidden files?
I checked my site and found the same.

These files start with a Dot, which in Linux is a hidden file.

Same here but although hidden they are 644 so the Owner should be able to overwrite them.

Looks like my earlier reply tovio didn't post. A lot of the files were .htaccess files which were, of course, always dot files, but how they got windows hidden attributes, I do not know. With UAC off, why that created any write problem, I do not know. Unfortunately, having some frustration with xdebug, I moved from WAMP to XAMPP to Laragon, so I can't point to a specific wamp server as an issue.

Hidden files in MS Windows is a Windows question. Most computers running a Windows operating system are configured by default to not display hidden files (e.g. pagefile.sys). "dot" files (e.g. .htaccess) are not normally hidden by Windows; a hidden file in Windows is a file with the hidden attribute enabled. If these "dot" files were hidden then someone or something hid them. Joomla does not do this. I have not heard of Wampserver or XAMPP (or other Windows website server apps) doing this either.

Understood. I do show hidden files, but even if I did not, being hidden does not affect permissions or the ability to open a file for writing. Do to C:\Users\Default\AppData and it opens, but AppData is hidden. It is weird phenomenon. I do not know how those files get set to "hidden" either, but they were all dot files, I think - there were 33 and I didn't check them all, so something decided they should be hidden in windows as well.

I'm checking out of this thread. Issue solved. If this weird thing happens to you try checking file attributes "read only" (for good measure) and "hidden" and remove those attributes if they are present.
