Why on completing this update to 5.1.1 on the default channel do I end up on 5.2.0 alpha1?

Could you check your Update Source settings?
System > Joomla > [Options]
Are they:
Update Channel: Default
Minimum Stability: Stable

"Update Channel" should be
"Default" to get/install packages from the current series
"Joomla Next" will get Joomla from the next series when available (in the future Joomla 6)

The "Minimum Stability" should be set to
"Stable" to get the latest version in the current series.
"Development" gets the development version (which is currently Alpha: https://developer.joomla.org/news/933-y ... lpha1.html ).
Alpha, Beta, and Release Candidate versions will each get their respective updates.

Thank you. I have no idea how Development was selected but I must have at some point in the past. It has not been changed since J5 was installed and I have been stepped through the updates correctly since. Looks like I was unlucky that J5.2.0 alpha1 landed yesterday!

One of my sites was set Next, Stable. No update was available until I changed it to Default.

Live and dev sites updated just fine. Thank you to all involved :D

Comments:
1. I love the new light/dark mode switch in Admin - thank you, Brian T
2. I was on the “Default” update channel and site remained that way after the update.

My site notified me of an update but when entering the site no update showed until I changed the Options to Next.

Surely with Options set Next, Stable then
either I get a notification "Joomla! version currently installed: 5.1.0
Joomla! version available for installation: 5.1.1" and when entering the site the update shows
or
The update doesn't show and no email is sent.

I don't know why this happened to Webdongle: if the site notified of an update, how was the notification sent? In my case, I received an email notification (for a website that was at Joomla 5.1.0) about the availability of v 5.1.1. In my case, the Update Options were set, as per usual, with

Update Channel: Default
Minimum Stability: Stable

I understand from what pe7er wrote that if a website was using Joomla 4 and the update channel was set to next then one would receive an email notification about the availability of v 5.1.1. From what Webdongle wrote, however, this does not seem to have been the case. That's strange.

My site displayed the ability to update to v 5.1.1 without any complications. Perhaps it was a caching issue in Webdongle's situation?

My site was not J4 it was J5. The site did not show an update because Next from J5 is J6 which does not exist. Yet the site emailed an update.

I agree. One would expect that with the update channel set to "next" that you wouldn't get an email unless there was something "next" you were waiting for.
