I updated to Joomla 3.9.9 from 3.9.8. It states all went well. But, it states I now have 3.9.8!!! I.e. same as before. At the same time, it states I have the latest version.

The auto e-mail notification from the website stated also new 3.9.9 is available.

But right now I got a notification from another website, different web host, that there is a new version available, but stating the new is 3.9.8, here I currently have 3.9.6. When I logon to backend, it also says 3.9.8 is available.

Confused. Any explanation?

Did you try going to Components -> Joomla Update and then click the Find Updates button?

Answering myself, with possible explanation. I copy from Twitter account @joomla:

ATTENTION: New notice of issue with multilingual sites. 3.9.9 has been pulled from the server to prevent it being used. 3.9.10 is being prepared with the fix and will be announced as soon as available. Thank you for your patience.

Ahh, glad I didn't have time today. And when I just went to check I couldn't get the update. So cheers!

Yes, and it states "You already have the latest release, 3.9.8." In a local language. But probably the explanation is that 3.9.9 has been pulled back, as I just wrote in this thread.

Yes, I agree Henrik. Apparently it has to do with multilingual sites. But, I think this issue will resolve itself as some time goes by.

It wasn't a complete waste of time. After discovering that there isn't a J! 3.9.9 update available, I performed a few site backups anyway (and tidied my desk, listened to a podcast, and visited the library which is something I haven't done for ten years), just for the heck of it. :)

In short, even this time a double release is necessary. This update seems to be causing some problems, but I haven't read any official announcements about it, just Facebook posts. After updating to Joomla 3.9.9 is it necessary to reinstall the backup? Or will 3.9.10 solve the mess that was made? I am increasingly puzzled about Joomla, and I believe that this episode will not do well for the reputation of our CMS

It depends on what you mean by official. After all, the President of the USA thinks that his Twitter account is official, doesn't he?

Yes, it was published at 11:49 pm - 9 July 2019. But the oxen had already escaped

To be honest with you, I hadn't updated any of my websites to J! 3.9.9, myself, (because I was out half the day visiting the library) and therefore I cannot say what the effect might have been. I agree with you that it was disappointing to discover that J! 3.9.9 was withdrawn without an "official" forum announcement. I don't spend all day monitoring Twitter and I rarely use Facebook.

I guess there are two possibilities here, for people who have updated to J! 3.9.9 and it has caused problems.

(1) Wait until J! 3.9.10 and then update from J! 3.9.9 and that should fix the problem(s) ... one would hope; or

(2) Restore your website(s) to the state they were in before you updated.

I don't have any other suggestions for you, sorry. :)

Oh dear. This must be so frustrating for the devs!
But it does sort of justify my habit of following this thread for a few days (while doing the site backups) before starting the actual update process :).

3.9.9 has been pulled back due to an issue. They are working on 3.9.10.

See the message at https://www.joomla.org/announcements/re ... lease.html
Note to users with multilingual sites: Please do not update to 3.9.9 and wait for 3.9.10.
More information can be found here https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/issues/25482

@Webdongle: interesting, isn't it? First of all, J! 3.9.9 was released, then it was pulled, and now it's back again. I'm not sure why the first-you-see-it-then-you-don't-now-you-see-it-again approach was taken when we know that it's not recommended for multi-language websites. And, besides, why waste time using it when the release has been superseded by J! 3.9.10?

I think it's a bit unfortunate that the forum announcement was clumsily modified as we see in the following screenshot:
donotuse_j399.png
That should be the end of it but it probably won't be. Cheers. :)

My three sites updated 3.9.8 to 3.9.10 without issues (no 3.9 .9). Like last month, the update was 3.9.6 to 3.9.8 (without 3.9.7).
