I usually read these release discussions for one purpose ... to learn from the experiences of other people when they're updating their J! CMS software. Once or twice I've discovered something myself and I've used these kinds of topics to share my own experience. However there hasn't been much to learn lately.

[ redacted ]

For what it's worth, I've updated all my websites to J! 3.9.24 and they still work ... and that's about all I can say.

I spent half an hour writing a couple of hundred words to *discuss* my thoughts about J! 3.9.24 in the context of J! 3.x and several paragraphs were removed. I did not write anything "off-topic" and the redaction seems to have been done only because someone didn't like something I wrote. Why can't we discuss J! 3.9.24?

Sorry, to hear that. However, this topic is meant to discuss about the Joomla 3.9.24 release.
And as you wrote it's indeed "to learn from the experiences of other people when they're updating their J! CMS software".
If you want to discuss about the 3.9.x roadmap, etc, please open a new topic,
Thanks!

I wanted to discuss J! 3.9.24 in the context of its strategic relevance to the J! project. There is no point in discussing the J! roadmap—anywhere on this forum; I did not even mention the J! roadmap in the now-redacted earlier post. What I wrote before was on-topic in relation to J! 3.9.24 but we won't know what I wrote, will we? Thanks, @pe7er, (and two others who have written to me privately) for writing "sorry to hear". I think that in the circumstances, however, I will reduce my further contributions to this forum to a trickle because it's just not worth the trouble any more.

I always read this Discuss the release-topic before I do the upgrade. If I am decently early, I also add my result even if it's only All workded well. Or there are findings which put me on hold, or possibly something I can add something to.

Sure I'm curious what from sozzled that was omitted from this topic. If the omission was correct or wrong, I obviously cannot comment.

It happens relatively often I get an e-mail notification that there is a new response to a topic where I have commented, for example in those release-related topics. But often there is no new comment when I look for them. I have assumed it is because those comments are considered as eg spam. And sometimes the new comment has been moved to another or new topic. That part of a comment has been deleted and not moved to another or new topic and a part of the comment has been kept, was a new variant to me.

And well, my update of three sites seems to have worked well; from 3.9.23 to 3.9.24.

Best wishes to all for work and comments with Joomla Forum! And yeah, of course to all who contributes to Joomla.
Best regards

I would like to mention there is a bug with J! 3.9.24 and it's completely on-topic (as far as this announcement discussion is concerned) to mention it here. I hope that the forum moderators will not redact part or all what I write here or move this post somewhere else.

It looks to me like only a few people are properly testing these new releases (but it's understandable because there aren't many people who are involved with pre-release testing) and that's just something we have to live with. It does, however, concern me that the developers do not thank us forum users for identifying issues that could be addressed and to inform us, here—on the forum—about known problems and what people can do about them.

In another discussion on this forum, one person found a problem with the non-translation of language constants involving com_actionlogs. A picture is worth a thousand words and here's a screenshot that illustrates that issue:
j3924_actionLog_untranslatedConstants.png
So, before the moderators decide that mentioning this issue here, in the general discussion about J! 3.9.24, please understand that we can all learn from these announcement discussions. There is a workaround (for those who may be interested) but that's not the point; the point is that these things happen and we wouldn't be aware of them if it were not for these general discussions about the announcements of new releases of J!

Perhaps, secondarily, the developers may also learn something if they interacted more often with this forum. ???

Thank you. :)

Yes, the Joomla project has a team of testers and can always use more testers for new versions.
Before new versions are released, a RC (Release Candidate) is released and announced in: viewforum.php?f=8

Please help out with testing new versions! Thanks!

It does, however, concern me that the developers do not thank us forum users for identifying issues that could be addressed and to inform us, here—on the forum—about known problems and what people can do about them.

Please keep all issues (and patches) at one place: The Joomla! Issue Tracker
If you find bugs with Joomla, please try to reproduce them with a clean Joomla version, and report them
https://issues.joomla.org/ (or directly on github: https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/issues )

That way the Joomla project has a structured collection of bugs,
and can patches more easily be developed.

The place to inform users about known issues is here:
https://docs.joomla.org/Category:Version_3.9.24_FAQ

In another discussion on this forum, one person found a problem with the non-translation of language constants involving com_actionlogs. A picture is worth a thousand words and here's a screenshot that illustrates that issue:
This issue has been reported yesterday at the Joomla! Issue Tracker: https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/issues/32158
If your issue is another one, and not yet reported, please create a new issue at Joomla! Issue Tracker.

Suggest

When a problem (that a user has) turns out to be a bug then:
1. The thread is moved to the bug reporting board.
2. Someone creates an issue and places a link in the tracker to the thread
3. The same someone posts a link in the thread to the tracker.
4. A dev (or tester) to post in the thread with info that the user can understand. link to work around etc.

That's how the system used to work. Bugsquad members who help in the forums triaged the problems in the forums to save the devs wasting time on non Joomla errors.

But all that seems to have 'flown out of the window'.

Thanks, @Webdongle, I agree. The simple approach involved using the forum at some point or another but, as you say, all that seems to have flown out the window.

Here's the news: the problem I mentioned today is not with J! 3.9.24 specifically; the problem is with the Joomla! Update process and the package used to update from an older version to the current version.

Most of my websites, that I updated from J! 3.9.23 to J! 3.9.24, failed to load the translations of the Action Logs constants. In one case, the update completely broke the backend of the test website (and I had to restore the site from a backup). Not to worry; I fixed that problem. We would not have detected this problem with the RC version (because the package used by the Joomla! Update process is different to the stable release). Testing the RC version would not have identified the problem that we now have.

The problem—the non-translation of the Action Log constants—is repaired by running the Joomla! Update component, click Check for Updates and then select Reinstall Joomla core files. I am not going to report this on GitHub and I'm not going to write about this in the docs; someone else can do that job.

The problem may not be something that everyone needs to be concerned about but it does shake one's confidence in the reliability of the Joomla! Update process that could cause other [as yet undetected] issues.

It's not an issue that needs to be communicated to the J! developers as a team. This is something that needs to be communicated to the release lead in charge of packaging the J! 3.9.24 release. I don't think we, who use this forum, should be asked, instructed or demanded of us, to hunt around to find the place(s) where these matters need to be brought to the attention of the people who need to know. I don't have enough time to explain these things in several different places.

For the benefit of the community as a whole, however, I'm explaining here—on the forum—what happened to me and how I went about fixing the problem. If the forum is not place where most people visit to get the latest information then someone needs to explain properly what is the purpose of this forum.

Completely agree. And would add that a dev (or bugsquad member) should be monitoring the forum to pick up on issues like that.

I agree with both of you. When I have found issues that could be bugs in Joomla, then it has been natural for me to post it here in the forum to be able to get the issue confirmed by others. It has taken me quite some time to understand that bugs should be reported elsewhere. I believe this forum should have a category for reporting of possible bugs that the developer also should monitor. It's a big step to report a possible bug at GitHub, before one has got confirmations from others that one is not the only one who's experiencing the same issue.

Thanks!

I haven't seen it before, possibly because it's a bit deep down in the category structure.
