Re: Discuss Joomla! 3.9.26
Now here's the thing (and I don't know why I'm writing it here because the developers never look at this forum):
Sure, the update works (well, it's worked on half-a-dozen test sites that I have) and I now see "Your site has been updated. Your Joomla version is now 3.9.26." But this update has performed differently to every other update I've done over the past x years. All my websites have Akeeba Backup installed (and all of these sites use the latest version of Akeeba Backup) and, of course, all of the sites have the System - Backup on update plugin enabled. What else would you expect?
In every case where I've run the update procedure, none of these cases automatically run the backup process beforehand. So, unless you're really on top of things and you've made a good backup of your website before you run the Joomla! Update process, you may find yourself with an updated J! website but with no mechanism to roll it back to the situation before you updated it. Further, I'm quite surprised when people have written that they've successfully updates "30+ websites" they've not encountered the situation.

EDIT 2>> Just adding that I have experienced this on a number of sites.

Re: Discuss Joomla! 3.9.26
After updating a couple more test sites (on two different servers) I've decided that it's too big a risk to update any more J! 3.9.25 websites to J! 3.9.26 until we get to the bottom of the matter. I don't know if this is a problem introduced in J! 3.9.25, or introduced with this latest J! update, or it's a problem introduced by one of several updates to Akeeba Backup. I don't care where the responsibility lies. I'm done with this update until this important issue is addressed.

Re: Discuss Joomla! 3.9.26
I noticed that the Back up on update symbol at the bottom of the screen had disappeared before the update of Joomla. Akeeba had just been updated before the update of Joomla. I believe the Back up on update has disappeared after the last update of Akeeba.sozzled wrote: ↑Tue Apr 13, 2021 10:37 pmYour Joomla version is now 3.9.26." Re: Discuss Joomla! 3.9.26
Agreed: the BoU icon disappeared a while ago but this doesn't explain/excuse the inoperability of the System - Backup on update plugin as part of the Joomla update procedure, does it?
See the attached screenshot that shows the automatic backup happening before the updated from J! 3.9.24 to J! 3.9.25. So, it worked then but it didn't happen now.
UPDATE: See https://www.akeeba.com/support/akeeba-b ... rking.html

Re: Discuss Joomla! 3.9.26
Maybe they don't use Akeeba Backup? It's not compulsory.
Maybe it's an issue with Akeeba Backup and not with Joomla? Whilst I respect your personal decision not to update, your post might be read by some as a recommendation not to update at all. I don't agree; the backup before update advice is still good and there are other ways to backup first which don't involve a 3rd-party solution.
My websites (admittedly not 30+) successfully updated to 3.9.26.
Thank you devs

Re: Discuss Joomla! 3.9.26
Yes, the System - Backup on update plugin is a system plugin. Many system plugins are developed as part of the J! core CMS and many other system plugins are developed by third-party developers. I have written my own system plugins.
Saying that a system plugin is "no longer part of" another extension is simply not true.
System - Backup on update v 8.0.3 is installed as part of Akeeba Backup and was developed by Akeeba.com. The forum at Akeeba.com notes that the problem—not automatically backing up a website before running the Joomla update procedure—is a known issue.
Until J! 3.9.26 was released I would not have been aware of this problem.
The important information for this forum is this: before people use the Joomla! Update component to update to J! 3.9.26 they should first perform a manual backup of their website. Until the problem with System - Backup on update v 8.0.3 is fixed, the plugin is not working and will affect all website owners who use v8.0.x of that plugin.
I'm holding off updating the remainder of my J! 3.9.x websites so that I have a testing platform for when a new version of System - Backup on update is released.

Re: Discuss Joomla! 3.9.26
The Akeeba plugin has been removed. It appears that one of the recent Akeeba updates uninstalled the plugin that auto backed up the site prior to Joomla update.

Re: Discuss Joomla! 3.9.26
@Webdongle: Do you have a link to where you found that the "Akeeba plugin" (which one) has been removed, please? I couldn't find it. I could only find the information that there was a known problem with the System - Backup on update plugin (which is installed on all of my websites as part of the updates to the Akeeba Backup component; the component installs a number of plugins.

Re: Discuss Joomla! 3.9.26
Yes, the automatic back up on update worked when updating from J! 3.9.24 to J! 3.9.25, but Akeeba Backup has been updated very recently when I had been running J! 3.9.25 for quite some time. I still believe it's the recent update of Akeeba that has caused the problem.
P.S. I've seen that you've discussed the issue with Akeeba backup on update further down in the thread.

I didn't find it, that's how I know it has been removed. Extensions >>> Plugins ... search Akeeba and the Akeeba BoU plugin is no longer there

Re: Discuss Joomla! 3.9.26
Regarding Akeeba, see https://www.akeeba.com/support/akeeba-b ... ckets.html where there are a number of tickets addressing this.
It's a known issue and will be addressed in their next update.
I just took the extra clicks and ran backups manually after doing a dev site and noticing it didn't backup first.
40+ sites updated to 3.9.26 successfully. Thanks to all involved!

Cant agree more. I rarely use Akeeba (I have my own system).JAVesey wrote: ↑Wed Apr 14, 2021 6:59 amMaybe they don't use Akeeba Backup? It's not compulsory.

But on site with Akeeba (version 7.5.1) updating 3.9.24 to 3.9.26, I have no problem with BOU. So the problem is with latest Akeeba.

Re: Discuss Joomla! 3.9.26
Was Akeeba the latest version when you updated J3.9.24 ?
Addendum
Installed fresh J3.9.25
Installed Akkeba with install from web (Akeeba reports v.8.0.4)
Activated backup on update plugin
Configured Akeeba
Navigated to Components >>> Joomla update It updated after performing backup
FULL SUCCESS
Installed fresh J3.9.25
Downloaded Akeeba v.8.0.4
Activated backup on update plugin
Configured Akeeba
Navigated to Components >>> Joomla update
NO AVAIL
Noticed that Extensions >>> Manage >>> Manage .. the plugin was not showing enabled even though I had enabled it in the Plugins? Enabled it there as well and FULL SUCCESS
Unable to replicate that failure?

3 sites updated, all OK. Thanks to the team!
(I don't use Akeeba backup, I have automatically daily backup from the host company and I create manually a backup just before every update to new Joomla version to be sure)
