Software Freedom Day 2008 @University of Makati - 09.20.2008

Post by Jdam » Mon Aug 11, 2008 12:31 am

Date: September 20, 2008 (Saturday)
Time: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Venue: University of Makati (UMAK)

Software Freedom Day (SFD) is an annual celebration in about 200 countries to propagate Free and Open Source philosophy.

In the Philippines, the Computer Professionals’ Union (CPU) has lead and organized SFD since 2004. CPU has connected a hundred volunteers, open/free software advocates and developers. CPU has introduced to hundreds of students and enthusiasts the ideals and benefits of free and open source software on this yearly event. SFD 2008 will be celebrated on 20 September 2008. SFD is a celebration of Software Freedom. For more information, visit

The big plan is to hold small events at the same time in different locations like UP Diliman and Holy Angels University in Angeles, Pampanga while the main event is happening at University of Makati (UMAK) and letting them all participate via Live Video Streaming thru NBN TV (Ch. 4) Network c/o Edison Go Tan, one of our active members. Last night, NBN TV already gave their consent in making this setup happen. Internet Cafe Association of Imus (ICAII) would also be providing the internet connection and try to get some sponsors for the computers to be used for the event.

Different groups are planning also to conduct pre-event activities:

- Campus Tours by UnPLUG
- Intro to FOSS on September 5, 2008 (Friday) @ University of Makati (UMAK) with the audience of their 1,000 students plus faculty staff

Ka-Joomla!, let us support this event. Let us tap other open-source communities. We must be united in making them realize what really FOSS is.
