English - Made in the Philippines

Post by Astig » Tue Apr 25, 2006 8:04 am

Based on my observation, eto yung mga English words na sa Pilipinas lang ginagamit... Or, iba ang meaning pag ginamit na sa english countries. Pag naalala ko pa yung ibang words na naencounter ko, ippost ko dito. Post din kayo kung meron kayong alam.

Cutting Trip - Jeepneys or busses go back to source without without reaching their destination. This usually happens to save some gas when they have no passengers.

Counter Flow - This happens when vehicles drive opposite the flow of their lane.

Undertime - Half-day in work; opposite of overtime.

Salvage - Instead of saving someone, this means to kill someone.

Hold-Upper - means mugger

Car nap - means car/vehicle jack

Snatcher - Pick pocket

Monthsary - Monthly anniversary

Dish Jockey - Fastfood chain term meaning dish washer

Teacher Factor - (not sure of this one) ability of a teacher to pass/fail a student based on discretion

Racket - Alternative source of income

Actually some of the words you refer to are actually accepted English words that also equate to the definitions you give and are not only used in the Philippines in the manner you specify:
Astig wrote: Counter Flow - This happens when vehicles drive opposite the flow of their lane.
This is actually an accepted form of Traffic management.  Whereby a lane on a highway may be used in different directions depending on the time of the day to assist in traffic management.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reversible_lane
Course here it isnt a traffic management tactic, but rather a driver tactic

Astig wrote: Snatcher - Pick pocket
This is actually the proper English definition of this word and is in common English usuage.
E.g. the person was a Purse Snatcher.

Astig wrote: Racket - Alternative source of income
This word is used in the manner you define within english usage, though when used in this context usually alludes to 'less then honest' business practices.
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=racket

E.g. in the US there are Anti-Racketeering laws
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/anti-racketeering+law

Counter Flow - This happens when vehicles drive opposite the flow of their lane.
I remember when an officemate mentioned that term to my former American employer and he said "what the hell is that?" and that gave me an idea that it is only used in the Philippines. But due to the fact that you made a research and an existing proof, then I guess my ex-boss just doesn't know it is really being used.

Salamat sa research kuya Rey.  :D

Although, hindi ako sure sa iba pang terms, I believe marami paring english na ginawa lang ng mga Filipino. Since second language na ng Pilipinas ang English, siguro napapaghalo na ang mga no-direct-translation Filipino terms sa English kaya nakakabuo ng mga terms na hindi accepted sa English countries or meron itong ibang kahulugan.

One term I heard recently at a Training Session from some of the ladies I coach (University Philippines Touch Rugby team) was

Addict

I forgot to ask what was the meaning ascribed to it, but I gather from the context it was used that it had been Philippinized  ;)

Sorry thats another common English term anywhere in the English speaking sphere.

Course if you dont believe me, go up to any waitress in the US/UK/AUS and see what their reaction is if you ask them:
"Hi, fancy a Quickie"
