This conference is a must-go for anyone with an interest in Joomla, from beginners to developers. Come and learn about all about Joomla 1.5 and what's new in Joomla! for you. You can look in at CeBIT (business technology exhibition) whilst you are there.
When: Weds 21st May 2008, 9-5pm
Where: Sydney Exhibition Centre
Keynote speakers: Andrew Eddie, Shayne Bartlett - more to be announced shortly
The programme covers:
* Joomla future directions
* Joomla 1.5 - Migration, templates, new features & more
* Joomla! case studies
* Meet the experts - panel discussion with all presenters
* More details soon... take our survey (below) to vote on what you want to see at the conference
Since we know many of you will be in town for the annual techfest that is the CeBit exhibition, we have chosen to host our Joomla!Day alongside it, so visitors can now enjoy the best of both events.
Bookings will be limited to the first 100 subscribers and we know this one will sell out. Look out for more announcements here soon.
We offer attractive sponsorship packages if you would like to be recognised as a sponsor of Sydney JoomlaDay 2008. For early details please contact me.
Have your say before we close our call for speakers - what do you want to hear about? If you can make it to Sydney in May, complete our survey here
http://joomladay.org.au/survey/index.php?sid=67344
and let us tailor our event to your needs - it's your day!

Re: Sydney Joomla!Day 19 May 2008
Have you purchased your ticket yet to the Sydney JoomlaDay Conference - 19th May at Darling Harbour?
One other amazing feature will be a template presentation by the one and only Dinah Randall. If you buy your early bird ticket today for $90 you will gain great insights into how Joomla! 1.5 templates work from one of the leading developers in Australia. You will also hear from Brad Baker, core team member, and Ashton Murphy from the GHOP project. Buy your ticket today to hear some great speakers - http://mycebit.com.au. Tickets selling fast!
Also, we are stitching up the rules for the Joomla! vs Drupal vs Plone Showcase build-off - teams will be roughly 5 in number each including html/css experts, components specialists, programmers and usability gurus. Teams will spend 7 hours after receiving a brief and being allocated a neutral graphic designer. All components and templates used in the site build have to be GPL/FOSS. Judging panels will include a charity representative who will need to be trained by each team to add content! WOW... this showcase build-off is looking awesome.

Re: Sydney Joomla!Day 19 May 2008
Latest news...our final speaker line up is here: http://sydney.joomladay.org.au. We've had a couple of very good last minute additions.
If you want to get a free official t-shirt with your registration, book now while our dwindling stocks last. First in, best dressed.
The Drupal vv Joomla! vv Plone competition has been cancelled, as Drupal will not now be holding their conference alongside CeBIT. Sorry folks! Look out for it later in the year.
Don't forget we are also putting on a series of snapshot presentations (15-20 minutes) at the Open Source Theatre on Tuesday 20th (all day) and Weds 21/Thur 22 (11am-2pm) at the CeBIT Australia exhibition. Schedule and details here: http://sydney.joomladay.org.au/content/view/26/1/. These presentations will NOT be repetitions of JoomlaDay.
Lastly, there will be drinks after JoomlaDay for you all to meet up and network...venue to be announced on the day, but it's nearby to the conference.

Re: Sydney Joomla!Day 19 May 2008
Thanks to everyone involved in organising, running and speaking at Joomla!Day, I really enjoyed the day and was glad to have a few ideas to bring back with me.
Highlights for me were the talks by Andrew Eddie on 1.5, especially template overrides which did answer my earlier question about html output (thanks!). I'm keen to start playing with this some more, and it'll be a much needed shove towards moving to 1.5 at work. From a personal perspective I would have enjoyed more talks at this level of detail/technicality but at the same time was very impressed with how accessible the talks/community/Joomla in general were.
Also congrats to Ashton, not only for his work in the GHOP contest for but getting up and talking about it and performing, there's no way I'd have the guts to do that in highschool. I was lucky to have a pretty awesome Comp Studies/SDD teacher who encouraged me a lot but it's sad to hear things are still pretty hit or miss in schools.
Thanks again, looking forward to another Joomla!Day.

Hi,
Just wanted to say thanks to all involved for an interesting day. Two developers from our company attended and personally I was very pleased with the range and content of the discussions.
Of particular interest to me was the 1.5 template overrides; a great idea and a real push to start working with 1.5!
Cheers,
Ben.

Yes, big thanks to Andrew and Ashton for their excellent presentations. I learnt a lot too!
For anyone who missed Norm's presentation and wondered what 'Intro to Joomla' would have looked like, see the video of Norm's presentation at Melbourne JoomlaDay in January here: http://www.joomladay.org.au/index.php?o ... Itemid=104
Thanks to Brad and Ashton for stepping in and doing the impromptu Installing Joomla demonstration

Re: Sydney Joomla!Day 19 May 2008
For anyone who wants details of presentations, pix and (eventually) videos of the presentations from Joomla Day, see http://sydney.joomladay.org.au. Also if you have material or comments to contribute, please do!
The Joomla Day was very successful, and I'm getting some very kind feedback about our wonderful speakers and also the networking opportunities provided by the day. All feedback welcome, good or bad, so we know what you want for next time.
Another huge Thank You to all the crew of speakers, volunteers and sponsors for making this event such a buzz.
If you're in Sydney, still two days left of CeBIT so come and see us at the Joomla! booth or the open source theatre next to the booth.
And don't forget to go to http://joomladay.org.au to keep in touch with what's happening with Joomla! around Australia, and to find a user group near you. Sign up as a member to meet in our Aussie Joomla! forums, and sign up for the mailing list if you want us to keep you posted about all our User Group events.
Next Sydney User Group meeting: Tuesday June 10th, 6pm-8:30pm - all most welcome.. See http://joomladay.org.au for details + new bigger venue, nearer the time.

Re: Sydney Joomla!Day 19 May 2008
Thank you to all involved for organising JoomlaDay Sydney 2008.
I found it a valuable experience in learning some of the ways to optimise and secure Joomla, some of the resources available to improve Joomla websites, some of the details and improvements made in the new version 1.5 as well as some tips and tricks of Joomla. It was fantastic to be involved in the Joomla community, hearing from the experts, listening to the suggestions and queries of end users and developers and being able to have my own questions answered.
Brad, in his presentation on security, briefly showed the Joomla Security Guide written by Russell Winter. I was wondering whether it could also be published on http://sydney.joomladay.org.au.
Thanks again!
