In case I forgot admin password, I just head over the url "forgot password", and let it send me an email with a token.

But if you website is compromised, that would be a different story. The bad guy probably changes the email address as well, so access to backend database sounds like the only solution

Edit: Im thinking, if the generic method to reset admin password with the backend database works, does it mean Joomla uses the same salt string in every installation?

If it is really the case, there is no extra benefit in term of security if someone figures out the salt string?

Using this website and creating my own hash from my own password worked to get back into my site. Thanks, never realized the hacker changed the admin password.

Hi All,

I don't know what wrong, but I have reset my admin password before and this time I cannot get it to work! I am using J1.5.8, and the way suggested above is the normal method, however this time it is not working.

I migrated the site from one domain to another and since this migration I cannot log into the admin area?

Am I missing something?

I have sorted this out, finally! I decided to check the permissions on the root folder(folder where joomla is installed) and discovered that it was set to 755. I changed this to 775 and I am now able to log into the admin.

Hopefully this helps someone!

Help! I have done all of these things. I have installed 1.5.9 multiple times and cannot get the password to work! I tried using the SQL query to no avail. When I try to go in and when I click on the jos_users I cannot figure out where to go in order to manually find the admin user (picture attached). I tried searching for the "admin" user and no results come up. I hate being those rare cases but here I am. I have setup Joomla 1.5 before but it didn't give me this kind of trouble.

What username did you log in to the administrator panel using? If you can't remember, look for user id 62 (from previous page where somebody suggested this was the default admin id).

I've got the same problems - normal methods of recovery for phpmyadmin are not working, neither any of the instructions above ...

Site is new - installed 1.5.8 from Fantastico and upgraded immediately

Cheers

In phpMyAdmin, open the table jos_users and click on the "Browse" tab/button.
Locate the user with id=62 (super-admin) and click on the pencil icon to edit it.
Change the username as you wish
In the password field, change the "Function" to MD5 and type the new password
Click on the "Go" button to save.

Now log in with the new username/password.

I have become an expert in resurrecting versions 1.5.2 to 1.5.8 to 1.5.9 ... so I have tried yours suggestions a few times -- and now have 2 sites down for same problem - and these sites are upgraded to 1.5.9 taken from Joomla site.

Activated the Login Form through the database, sent myself a token, and could only enter as regular member - when using the login page.

is 1.5.9 different?

M'am

I had block set to 1 and as a result I was not able to login even after following the above instructions. So I set the block to 0 and used MD5 and a new password ( I just simply used an 8 char password - no need to enter any MD5 32char code in here - MD5 hash is automatically generated as soon as you press the Go to save the changes).

I was pulling my hair for sometime and finally realized the block setting and now I am good. Thanks for the great instruction with graphics.

Change this number to "21232f297a57a5a743894a0e4a801fc3" - it works!

"Anyone know the Joomla 1.5 hash for admin? I'll race you to it..."

Can't get there from here. The salt means it's different on every website. Just use the regular md5 hash for 'admin'. That will work at first--long enough to get you in.

By temporarily removing the authentication in PHP, you can let anyone login. So, in Joomla 1.5 RC, you can go to plugins/authentication/joomla.php and modify the line:

if ( $crypt == $testcrypt) {

so that it reads:

if ( true /* $crypt == $testcrypt */ ) {

Now everyone can login with any password. Change your password to something that you can remember. Do not forget to put the original authentication code back in.

I was wrong about the salt hash in 1.5. All you need is the md5.

Here is the post on how to recover passwords:

humvee wrote:The password encoding that is done by Joomla! itself not only uses MD5# but also SALT which takes the MD5# and encrypts it even further.

MD5# will still work as previously described
