Hey everyone,

I just started using SmartOptimizer, and my site is already loading a lot faster! Great! But I have concern....there are no files generated in the "Cache" folder...does that mean that SmartOptimizer isn't working properly, or is optimized in any way? I have tried CMOD'ing it to both 777 and 775.

I have a similar issue, there are NO files in the cache folder (777 or 755) but I also do not get any errors.

How do I find out why its not doing anything? I've tried the .htaccess file with JUST the stuff from smartoptimizer as well as the smartoptmizer stuff added to the top of the file. Neither seems to take effect.

Where did you exactly uploaded the smartoptimizer folder ?
You must put it where the index.php of your joomla is

Alright, In a earlier post I explained that I would get pop up saying that a file and could not be found, even though it is there. I wanted to excluded that file, and now I did and it works. I asked the creator for help and this is what he said:
You can exclude certain files by modifying your .htaccess following these rules:

find these lines in your htaccess :
<IfModule mod_expires.c>
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f
RewriteRule ^(.*\.(js|css|html?|xml|txt))$ smartoptimizer/?$1
</IfModule>

<IfModule !mod_expires.c>
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f
RewriteRule ^(.*\.(gif|jpg|jpeg|png|swf|css|js|html?|xml|txt))$ smartoptimizer/?$1
</IfModule>

and change them as follows (replace "certainfile" with your own filename and for more files to be excluded just repeat that line with those filenames):
<IfModule mod_expires.c>
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !certainfile\.js$
RewriteRule ^(.*\.(js|css|html?|xml|txt))$ smartoptimizer/?$1
</IfModule>

<IfModule !mod_expires.c>
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !certainfile\.js$
RewriteRule ^(.*\.(gif|jpg|jpeg|png|swf|css|js|html?|xml|txt))$ smartoptimizer/?$1
</IfModule>

Good luck

SmartOptimizer is quite nice!!!! It's make my site run faster more than ever!
:D Thanks SiriusOCT.

Beside the speed within J through SmartOptimizer, I just concern about the first blank seconds of site loading!
I mean after we key-in the domain and Enter (start), the browser takes from 1 till 3 seconds to load or do something then J site is loaded! I visited some J sites but there's no the first blank seconds as my site!
Is this first blank seconds a problem? what should I do to fix it?

Please advise me!

Thanks!

Just wanted to say thanks SiriusOCT, for bringing this to light!

I found this gem while checking out how to compress mootools etc, and I had been checking my site on Yslow previous to implementing this... there is a definite inprovement now viewing the site on a slower connection/box!

"Since some PHP parsing occurs per request, CPU overhead is higher that serving plain uncompressed JS and CSS. So It may not be efficient for very high traffic sites"

- The above, found on the author's page (farhadi) is of concern however - I will be using this until any issues are noticed.

One of my sites went from a score of 38 -> 65, another went from roughly 40 to 85.... (Yslow)

Javascript: 28203 7.82 2.35 <- 28203 seems pretty good!

- followed the instructions, appended the included .htacces info into my own at the top as instructed, and boof - this took about 10 minutes to implement! anyone looking to speed up their Joomla site should be checking this out! :D

One quick question;

so - I take it there is no need to compress the mootools and css further (which I have not done) in combination with utilizing this tool? - that there would be not much of a gain in speed?

Hi (thanks, when it's good, it's good to share ^^)

Absolutely no need to compress more, because you'll certainly get some javascript errors or alt on some scripts, so do not cumulate the optimizations.
For the CSS this is less dangerous, but I do not recommend too

I've already tested that by my side, but the little gain that you get is very expensive because of much more time to expand and decode.

**PART SOLVED** Gzip, Minify, Emebed, Concatenate

Post by Pinc » Wed Feb 11, 2009 4:11 am

FIGURED THIS ONE OUT! The file I downloaded from joomlahacks was bad. Went to the link listed on this thread and it was good. Below I posted:
Also noticed I don not have a cache folder in the siteoptimization folder. Is this part of the problem? Do I need to create one?
This folder was in the new download.
Site went from a "38" to a "48" though. Site still has no CSS.
Any ideas why?

If I cut this out of my .htaccess file:

Code: Select all

<IfModule mod_expires.c>
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !certainfile\.js$
RewriteRule ^(.*\.(js|css|html?|xml|txt))$ smartoptimizer/?$1
</IfModule>
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
	RewriteEngine On

	RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
	RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
	RewriteRule ^(.*\.(js|css))$ smartoptimizer/?$1

	<IfModule mod_expires.c>
		RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f
		RewriteRule ^(.*\.(js|css|html?|xml|txt))$ smartoptimizer/?$1
	</IfModule>

	<IfModule !mod_expires.c>
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !certainfile\.js$
RewriteRule ^(.*\.(gif|jpg|jpeg|png|swf|css|js|html?|xml|txt))$ smartoptimizer/?$1
</IfModule>
</IfModule>
<FilesMatch "\.(gif|jpg|jpeg|png|swf|css|js|html?|xml|txt)$">
	FileETag none
</FilesMatch>
the site loads, but obviously the SiteOptimizer won't work.
With it in I get a blank page. have read through all 3 pages of posts here.
Using a Yoo Theme template. Any ideas?
Yes, I replaced the word "certainfile" with the file I thought needed to be there. Does anyone know what file needs to be there?
Also noticed I don not have a cache folder in the siteoptimization folder. Is this part of the problem? Do I need to create one?
Thanks in advance.

I prefer Joomla plugin:CssJsCompress, which can also implements the same functions: Javascript, Css aggregation, compress and GZIP etc.
However, it is much easy to use.

Unfortunatly CssJsCompress crasch some templates with all settings so a combination works with for me with QueryCache from Joomlaperformance.com http://www.joomlaperformance.com/nightly/QueryCache/ qc_1.5_rev353.tgz 2009-Feb-07 01:00:03 10.0K application/x-tgz

Is concatenation working for everyone else? I have gzipping and everything else working well, but I can't get it concatenate javascript or css files. I've tried following the directions (at the drupal site) for changing my css and javascript links in the format mentioned... but that just got me a blank css file. Is there maybe a conflict with Joomla's .htaccess file (which I'm using with the smart optimizer code on top)?

Also, anyone know why yslow has such different results than other performance checkers like weboptimization.com? With yslow I'm getting 25 http requests but 45 over at weboptimization. Also, the file sizes for total css and js don't agree by a pretty large margin. I've attached screenshots.

Otherwise, great script. I couldn't get cssjscompressed working well with my site but this just worked right away.

Hi all,

I have been following the thread with interest. I would love to speed up my site as well.
Today I tried. For many hours...! ???
First of all I made the .htaccess active. Site was running without it and that in itself seemed to get the site slightly faster. The .htaccess is in the Joomla root directory.(/htdocs/)
Next step was to copy the SO folder and paste the SO .htaccess code into my own .htaccess file.
The moment I do that, I cannot access my site at all. I get an internal server error. (500)
I tried many different configurations based on this thread but to no avail.
Does anyone have any ideas please?
This SO does seem to be a good plugin but I just cannot get it to work.
Help please!

Thanks in advance.
London LHR.

Hi,

Don't you forgot to uncomment this line in your htaccess ?

Code: Select all

#RewriteBase /
Try this:

Code: Select all

RewriteBase /
and if your joomla is in a sub-folder just add the name of it:

Code: Select all

RewriteBase /the name of the folder/

SiriusOCT,

I need your help, I have my joomla installed in a sub folder. I installed the smartoptimizer within that folder where the .htaccess is available. I modified the .htaccess file with the code from the smartoptimizer .htaccess.

When I view my site its as if it is not loading any css. or js files. Same is happening in the admin area, like the poster above. I am getting no error messages.

I've tried adjusting the config settings, but still the same thing.

Hopefully you can shed some light on it for me.

http://www.spiceractive.com/sa

Thank you!

I am running 1.5.9
SH404SEF, and SEF Joomla Patch

With those three together J 1.5 native is fast.
- I started with cssjscompress V1.1, coupled with Smartoptizer 1.7b, and had a few issues with CSS with my site, but not too bad. I have tried subsequent versions of cssjscompress since then, and none of them seem to be compatible to work together as V1.1 & 1.7b do as stated above.

- I had an issue with the popup in backend "out of base directory" - used the index.php in the smartoptimizer folder to identify the script causing the issue - it was MFBLANK - which, is a great script, but I couldn't take the popups anymore in backend, so I uninstalled mfblank.

I know the new versions of cssjscompress allow you to exclude files/scripts? (although I cannot use it) - perhaps smartoptimizer does as well. - If anyone can lend me a hand as to how I can exclude certain JS, if smartoptimizer has an issue with it, or, how to include it somehow without the error (using cssjsscompress v1.1 & SO 1.7b)
that would be great - I really need mfblank... until then I will search for another plugin that
can do the same thing as mfblank - thats compatible somehow with this great team.

On another issue, I have a questions regarding smartoptimizer, and, cssjscompress - they both seem to have alot of cache files belonging to them. - What happens to these? are they automatically deleted - (I think not) - how long should they be kept? (how many days) - I would like to setup a cron job to run a script to delete these old cache files if nothing is looking after them, as the cache folders get quite large after a week or so ;) - I am concerned that nobody has questioned this at this point - perhaps its not an issue?

is there a simple command I can put in my cpanel's cron job to run, that will delete files older than a certain date in these particular folders? - im a total newb, any help appreciated. - running on apache linux.

Thanks for all the great advise so far at this point!

Hello,
- I had an issue with the popup in backend "out of base directory" - used the index.php in the smartoptimizer folder to identify the script causing the issue - it was MFBLANK - which, is a great script, but I couldn't take the popups anymore in backend, so I uninstalled mfblank.
To solve this, just edit the file mfblank.php and find:

Code: Select all

		$document->addScript( 'plugins/system/mfblank/mfblank.js' );
Replace by:

Code: Select all

		$document->addScript( '/plugins/system/mfblank/mfblank.js' );
In fact this is often the same issue for the others who got the error popup (out of...) that's related to the bad relative link in the components, lacks of a slash. So everyone should check in the files of the components or plugin or module to see if this is not the case.

(just to know: for me mfblank broke my rss feed, is this the same for you ?)

About the cache, for SO, they have an expire header (one month as far as I remember). When the timeout is reach the file is replace.
But only if you have configure (config.php) like this:

Code: Select all

//if you change it to false, the files will not be checked for modifications and always cached files will be used (for better performance)
$settings['serverCacheCheck'] = false;
and

Code: Select all

//Setting this to false will force the browser to use cached files without checking for changes.
$settings['clientCacheCheck'] = false;
If not (so they're set as "true") each file will be update if they're any differences between the cache files and the real actual files.

Hi lies, I'm having the same thing.

Could you post your .htaccess?

I'm confused of how to add my file there..

Wich one of this should it be:

Code: Select all

		RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !en.js\.js$
		RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !../plugins/editors/jce/tiny_mce/plugins/advcode/langs/en\.js$
I only get this problem when I turn SEO on.
Have anyone succeed doing this optimization WITH clean urls??

The problem is that I have Joomla as main app with another app framed in Joomla. The the second app also have phpBB in a subfolder and it doesnt work.

I have to fix the second/third app .htaccess file for SEO purposes working fine. But I cant use it with that project set up M4rc0. :'( It work fine for the first Joomla app but crashes the other ones.

Any solution or suggestion? I will try to fiddle with the RewriteBase /the name of the folder/ again and see if it works..

Success in the long run Its not about the code its about the people and community that's make it!
Its not what you say its what you do that matters!

I see. I think RewriteBase / is your solution.. This is kind of hard (for me at least)

I have a similar case, I have to choose for either SEO or optimization.

So far I choose optimization but I'm struggling to make my joomla SEO work with the optimization.
If you find a solution for your case, let me know ;)

Specially about SEO + optimization working together.

Do you have SEO in your joomla enabled with the optimization?
