The SSL on the home page thing...

Post by monkeynutz » Wed Apr 08, 2009 8:17 pm

Hi friends,
I am one of the users who is being driven crazy by the fact that when I use an "https" page, the home page will not kick back to "http" regardless of the parameters being used in the backend. I have found that this only applies to the "default" menu item...when I switch the default menu item to another page the home page will switch back to "http" as it should according to the parameter "ignore" or "no" for the ssl.

Does anyone know how to make the home page revert back to "http" when it is the default page?

I am not sure why it is ignored when the "home" page is the default

This is a problem because my advertising is on the home page and of course the advertising is not secure...therefore internet exploder users get the "page contains both secure and unsecure" prompt.

Frustrating

HELP

THanks

Not sure, hope some one comes up with a solution...I tried some htaccess hacks and redirects...no luck

I did change the "default" menu item to the "home" button on one of my other menus...now the home button on the main menu directs back to http as it should...of course the other menu with the default now has the glitch...but the main menu is used most often

that's the best solution I have right now

:eek:

what's interesting is there already exists the option for menu items including the home page to ignore SSL (Parameters (System)). But, it is not working; whether that's with the login or any menu item.

This needs to be fixed or a work around.

This really cannot be an issue with Joomla.

You have an SSL certificate so you must be using a shopping cart? Is the setting in there set to use https on the correct page?

I would not being using .htaccess for this issue because it lies within your cart or your hosting provider set-up of your SSL certificate.

No shopping cart. Just the standard Joomla install using an SSL certificate.

What I've seen now is it is an issue with whatever is set to the "Default Page" under the menu. Even if you set the default menu item SSL to "Off" it will still show HTTPS until you click on a non-default menu item that has SSL off. Only then will you be back to HTTP.

It looks like there is a bug submission for this dating back to 2008 with no one assigned to it yet.

I am using Virtuemart and the https and http go back and forth as they should inside virtuemart...the issue is specific to the menu item called "home" when it is set to default

I have an SSL certificate for my site but am not using a shopping cart. Our site uses forms to collect personal data, so encrypting that data was necessary. At this point, all the menu items link to https pages, and I'd like to remedy that.

I am now following this thread and look forward to a fix.

Having the same problem here to.

I have set the params of the login module to use SSL, but after login, the URL's remain on https instead of going back to http. There is a slight performance hit running a site completely under https, albiet not huge, at least not in my case.

However, even when the user logs out,they still remain on https!

Also, for me, the SSL options for the 'Home' menu item (the default menu item) dont appear to have any affect.

I'll be watching this thread with great interest,
Kris...

Just thought I would pass along how I fixed this problem on a site for a client...

I have the same issue as many of you. I have one form (so no shopping cart) that needed to use an SSL but the 'default' home button would always hold the SSL URL and not switch it back to non-secure even when the System Parameters in the menu were set to SSL "off".

My solution was to create a menu that is not being used on the front end of the site. I then created a new home menu item that was the same as the home menu item in the main menu. Then I changed the 'default' to the home menu item in the 'fake' menu. Make sure after this is done to change the settings with your modules as well. I had a problem, for some reason, with IE7 (not really surprised) with the modules on the home page didn't show up but once I changed the modules to show on the 'fake default', the problem was also solved with IE (now that I think about it, it may have been an issue with JoomSEF).

Anyway, this worked like a charm for me... and I hope it helps you.

Thank you for that post, j3. I'd been racking my brain for over an hour messing with htaccess settings and system params on menu items. Moved the home link to a footer menu and made it the default and now the top Home item works perfect. Finally, I can go to bed!

Don't know if anyone else is still stuck with this problem, but I too was in "Home Page is always SSL no matter what" Hell. It all started when I forced SSL on the entire site to take advantage of my Certificate. Later, I realized the SEO implications so I tried to turn it off and discovered I was in a very hot place surrounded by guys with tails and pitchforks :-[ . After trying many things, it has gone away with the following changes:

In Joomla Admin:
1. Site->Global Configuration->Server->Force SSL: Administrator Only
2.Site->Global Configuration->Site->Search Engine Friendly URLs: No
3. Comment out RewriteRule in .htaccess: # RewriteRule ^.*$ https://%{SERVER_NAME}%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L]
4. Menus->Menu Manager->Menu Items->{each item}->Parameters (System)->SSL Enabled [On|Off]
5. Tools->Clean Cache: select all then ->Delete

Note for step 2: It works with SEF No and breaks with SEF Yes - I think this is the crux of the problem. There's some talk about this issue at Joomlacode for 1.6.
Note for step 4: I set some menus On (https) and some Off (http), notably the default menu "Home" is Off

In the browser (Firefox):
1. Tools->Options->Network->Offline Storage->Cache: Clear Now

It's snowing now :pop .

An update: it appears that Joomla core SEF causes a 404 if a menu is marked "SSL on" and the Server is marked "Force SSL: None" or "Force SSL: Administrator Only". Examining the https string disclosed when hovering over the relevant link, it appears to be correct (e.g. https://netpriori.com/product-buying/pr ... ces-prices). However, when I click it, I get the 404. I have been forced to mark all menus "SSL off" as SEF links are more important to me now as I work to get a page rank.

This might help: My prob seems to be solved now.
Go to module manager and select main module.
Under advanced select "No caching"

I am seeing this issue with the 'home' link - tried some of the options here, 'no caching on the main menu module - but still it reverts to https when after visiting my single page which has SSL certificate - has anyone found a solution?

Any help - much appreciated

I'm not sure I set this solution up correctly -

I created a 'fakemenu', created a copy of the home menu and set it on the 'fakemenu' as the default.

However, when I navigate to the Home from my topmenu, it still has the SSL on.

Did I miss anything?

Help please - Thanks -

Hi, this 'SSL Redirection' extension really sorted a similar issue for me - hope it helps others:
