Limiting User Submition/editing

Post by Clexis » Fri Sep 18, 2009 3:40 am

i have been building a website, on and off for about 6 months now. since i have recently gotten a little bit more free time, i have been spending it again on the website.

Anyways, i want to allow my users to submit articles, but for the article only to be published with my approval(that is incorporated in joomla), but the question is, that after i publish it, they can go and edit them to whatever they want and i dont need to approve it again.. I dont want that, is there any way where after i publish the article, no one except me can edit it, or to allow the Author to edit it, but i have to approve before the UPDATED article is published. is there any way to do that?

thx, i know you guys can help me, i just hope its not a dumb question :D

I'm curious if there's a way to do this as well.

The best solution I can think of is for you to change the Author to yourself and then type the actual author's name into Author Alias when you publish an article. This way, only you can edit the article.

I found another post where it sounded like someone was trying to change the core logic so only Publishers can edit published articles. I'm not sure if this will help or not. I try not to change core logic:

the only thing with changing to that i am the author is, i am expecting the site, later on to be very populated with lots of published articles, and if i would have to do that with every article, it would end up getting in the way of the rest of the site.

i could do it for now, but im a perfectionist, so because of that, the site is down for now, and i will only put it up when i think its done, which means, when i have that problem solved. but thx for the reply and i will take a look at that link.. thx

I found another post where someone was talking about this:
http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?p ... 0#p1800690

I'm going to post and see if they found a resolution.

I'm going to look into creating a plugin to do this. If I just redirect any user (lower than Publisher?) that tries to edit a published article to a page with a message telling them they can't edit published articles, does that work for you?

Anything else you think would be useful?

that would work as long as there willl be no run around to let them do it.. for example.. just changing the url to the correct one and it would let them

I finally got around to working on this. I should have it packaged and available tomorrow for you to test out.

Try this out and let me know what you think:
http://www.cmsmarket.com/extensions-dir ... ticle+edit

You are the first person to use it, so be sure to try it on a development site first.

All feedback is welcome.

Maybe you can lead me in the right direction. I need to find a way to do the following; I will create an article, basically a profile of someone. Once the article is published, I want to allow the user it's about to be able to edit the information without me being involved. However, I would like to be notified that they did edit the article. So only one person able to edit a specific article, nothing else.

Thanks and I hope you can point me in the right direction.

If your user's are authors, you can change the author of the article to them and then they will be able to edit it.

There are extensions to send you mails when user's update articles. Submit Mailer is the one I know about:

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking at an extension at http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions ... ction/9128 and it appears to do everything I want, but now it's a pain in the butt to figure out. I understand your suggestion, but I don't want to have to do anything other than allow a single user access to a single article in order for them to edit it at their leisure.

Check out the extension referenced above and see what you think,

Thanks for the reply.

I agreed. Figuring it out is going to be the hard part. I think once you have a full understanding of how it works, though, you'll be able to do pretty much anything you want.

Make sure to write a review once you know the component to tell others if they should or should not use it.

Good luck!
