Post by AXELTOPOLINO » Sun Nov 22, 2009 3:01 pm

Thanks for the answer, but I've already seen it.
I'm honest: I can't do a donate now, even if it will be correct.
However the component is under GNU GPL and it's very popular.
Do Anyone know what file i have to correct?

Sorry for my selfishness ( :( ) and thanks for your help!

Hi Thulemanden,

I'm really young and this is my first website. I would like that this small website becomes perfect.
And the "powered by phoca download" is terrible for me... normally I remove (when the license is GNU GPL V2) copyright for a graphic problem, but I often advise these components to my friends and I help phoca in a different way..

I hope you are so kind to help me for that :D

Well... I go to the download page and I see a lot of files; Then I go at the bottom of the page and I read "powered by phoca download"...It's like a fake site. I worked for 5 months to modify the joomla core alone and it was really funny, but now I would see a nice finshed work. "powered by phoca download" means "this website is not professional", but i've worked hard :(

Please i'm not a big company, but only a young man.

Thulemanden, is it so terrible if I remove the footer?

Thanks :D

I just wonder if it's worth all the trouble.

I don't think the credit looks 'unprofessional' rather than removing it seems less professional.

It is GPL, it is open source, you can do what you want with it on your website.
No, it is not GPL, it is GPLv2.0 and you should follow the copyrights of the GPLv2.0 versions, above all:

GPL 2.0 license 1, 2 c)

1. You may copy and distribute verbatim copies of the Program's source code as you receive it, in any medium, provided that you conspicuously and appropriately publish on each copy an appropriate copyright notice and disclaimer of warranty; keep intact all the notices that refer to this License and to the absence of any warranty; and give any other recipients of the Program a copy of this License along with the Program.

You may charge a fee for the physical act of transferring a copy, and you may at your option offer warranty protection in exchange for a fee.

2 c) If the modified program normally reads commands interactively
when run, you must cause it, when started running for such
interactive use in the most ordinary way, to print or display an
announcement including an appropriate copyright notice
and a
notice that there is no warranty (or else, saying that you provide
a warranty) and that users may redistribute the program under
these conditions, and telling the user how to view a copy of this
License. (Exception: if the Program itself is interactive but
does not normally print such an announcement, your work based on
the Program is not required to print an announcement.)

.
1. Your interpretation of that clause differs from others' interpretation of that clause.

2. If I were using the component I would remove the front-end advertising and let you come get me if you desired to dispute the issue.

3. I have no interest in debating this issue.
Been discussed before. Been disputed before.
Beating a dead horse as they say.

You make very nice components and I wish you well.

There will be no further response from me about this issue.

Hi,

1. I don't make any interpretation there, I have only added the right information there (the component is GPLv2.0 not GPL) and pasted there a part of GPLv2.0 license, nothing more.

2. Sorry, I don't understand. Link to project page is no advertising, it is a motivation item to move the Opensource project forward. As you know, Opensource does not mean, only one will make everything. It means, someone will do something, somebody else will do something else and all will move the project forward. So every user who is active in the forum, who is active in translating, who is active in developing, etc. get every needed information he/she needs. In fact, you demotivate all other users which want to move the project forward :-(

3. No problem there. Maybe you mean, you will help people if you will write such guides here, but this can take an opposite effect. You will help to "one" user but you will discriminate a lot of other users. Because of such guides, all developers who make free components in their freetime, coordinate free language support, make free support in forum, via mail, etc. will lose all the motivation to do it. :-(
I have no interest in debating this issue
I respect this. Just try to think forward if "helping" one user will not discriminate other users. :-(

Is this another example of Joomla cronyism?

.

You can also use plug-ins which enable you to remove or replace page output code.
- Abivia Redaction Plugin
- ReReplacer - search and replace

This is often easier than hacking again with each new update.

Safe!!!
Now I can fix simplecaddy's empty cart - it's only about 20 pixels high and makes the design look cramped. ReReplacer - sounds wicked, thanks so much for the tip mate!

Looks like the RerReplacer or similar won't work for long.
http://www.nonumber.nl/forum/index.php? ... 219&page=0

And ya know, I actually donated to this guy and he said it was not enough. On top of that, I also donated before for the gallery component too. I guess I am switching to a more opensource friendly solution. And I will advise my customers to do so too.

Thanks for your headsup. Doesn't affect me, but it's good to be informed.
I find this to be a rather petty coding war going on here.

"It is NEVER acceptable to delete anything in a user's database or on their website without their knowledge and permission."

Absolutely.

Clause 2c of GPL v2 applies to interactive programs, "when started". For example when you start an IRC client, it writes a bunch of copyright information (in GUI systems typically in a splash screen).

Web applications clearly don't fall into this model. At best, there would be a dump of this data when a new user session started. Tagging every page of output is, IMO, not contemplated by this clause. Even if it was, this is a "powered by" back-link, not "an announcement including an appropriate copyright notice and a notice that there is no warranty [...]". That would make for a real mess, wouldn't it? So now 2c is not relevant and it doesn't apply to what we're discussing.

Next, from the same clause: "Exception: if the Program itself is interactive but does not normally print such an announcement, your work based on the Program is not required to print an announcement." The "Program" here is the web server, then PHP. Joomla is a script, something not well covered in the GPL. PHP and the web server do not "normally print such an announcement".

Thus, for several reasons, I think clause 2c does not apply in this case.

[Now if someone removes the copyright notice from the code, that's a big problem and a clear violation of the GPL. But we're not talking about that, we're talking about the HTML data that is the program's output.]

I also strongly believe that Phoca deserves to be compensated for their productive work. In my opinion people who use it on a commercial site have a moral and ethical obligation to make a donation. However I don't think an open source product should be trying to force users to do the right thing. Especially when Phoca says they distribute it "without restrictions".

It is this line of reasoning that led me to write the Abivia Redaction Plugin. I'm sure some don't agree with this reasoning, but no debate on this subject has ever come to a clear consensus. I think clause 2c in the GPL 2.0 does not apply, others think it does. Everyone is entitled to an opinion.

Phoca Gallery 2.6.1 has explicit code that looks for my plugin, and disables any Phoca rules. In a way this is a good thing, because it exposes their true philosophy. They have now endorsed code that goes in and secretly modifies your data. Is this true to the spirit of open source?

Fortunately, the test in 2.6.1 is primitive. Since instructions provided here seem to be in the realm of censorship, abivia.net's forums provide several ways to restore the desired behaviour. I strongly believe that what the Redaction plugin does is in complete compliance with the letter and spirit of GPL 2.0.

I am sorry about that. I guess I was getting confused with the Copyright Header and the displayment of the the footer.

@H13
You may interpret GPL differently. I don't agree with you but I respect your interpretation. But playing with plugin parameters is simply dishonest...

Easy to work around.

One way:
Find the function and just delete/disable everything inside it.
The function is discussed on both the Redaction and ReReplacer forum threads on this subject.
Works in v2.6.1 and v2.6.2.

Another way:
The Redaction Plugin can rather simply be renamed to another plugin name.
Make your own custom plugin and it is virtually impossible detect and/or delete.

The Abivia Redaction Plugin User Manual is in progress and planned to be released within a few weeks.
(waiting to release it at the same time as some other documentation projects).
The manual has instructions on how to clone the Redaction Plugin.

Ding. Round 4 goes to the GPL.
