Install docs don't say which dirs should be apache writable

Post by sneakyimp » Tue Jun 22, 2010 10:09 pm

I entered the requisite FTP info when Installed Joomla and Joomla was able to write my config file, HOWEVER when I tried to upload images using the media manager, I was unable to until I set the ownership of the image folder and everything in it to be writable by apache.

I have since stumbled across other folders which also need to be writable by apache: tmp, cache, etc.

It would be most helpful to know what directory permissions one needs during the install process.

This is quite subjective and depends how apache and php are setup. Ideally you should be running on suphp (or equivalent) which will negate the need for you to set an files and folder permissions manually.

Well perhaps then suPHP should be listed as one of the prerequisites for Joomla then?

It's not a prerequisite, just something that makes it simple if you are not familiar to configure a server to work with a script like Joomla. Have you checked the Joomla System Info in your admin backend for a clear list of the folder that need to be writeable yet?

Now THAT is the list I am after. I wasn't aware such a list existed. I think it would be extremely helpful to mention the availability of this list in the install process. I don't recall seeing the directory and file permissions step mentioned here. Maybe I skipped over it in my rush to get a peek at Joomla!

BTW, that article (found in a google search for 'joomla instllation') is an entirely different article than the installation manual linked from the wiki (which is what you get when you click 'documentation' from www.joomla.org.

That's because the former is for Joomla 1.0 which is a very old version, whereas the latter is for Joomla 1.5 which is the current version.
