How to enable gzip compression in Joomla (1.5.20)?

If I want to enable gzip compression for my Joomla site, do I only have to enable it in the configuration page? Will this be enough to enable gzip-compression?

OR

- Do I also have to add some lines to php.ini?
- Do I also have to add some lines to my httpd.conf?

You probably will need to talk to your host if it's not enabled by default.

Right, The most of host provider was enabled by default, than you've just set to yes in the global Config.
You may also need to use SO or other extension in order to speed up your site loading.

Anyone can provide me the technical details? (if I host the thing myself ;-)

What lines do I have to add in my php.ini or httpd.conf to make it work?
