Anyone that has a very slow site should post a link to that site.
That will enable a person, who wants to help, the ability to have a look and maybe able to offer advice about cause of that site being slow in generating the page(s).

That is a problem with the free or economy hosting sites.
When not paying or paying a very low amount for a service, there is a likely change that it will be a low grade service, most of the time one has to share the resources with too many others.
And generating pages will suffer, no matter how well you tweak the scripts.
There are some very good hosts.
Where this forum is hosted is one of the very good ones.

Here's one http://www.varitechweb.com/joomlatest/

I'm 99.9% sure the problem is something GoDaddy has done - my sites were all working perfectly and then they "migrated my hosting for better performance" (yeah for somebody else) and then there's a 10 second lag before the site even starts to load

once it starts to load its pretty fast - but for 10 seconds it does nothing

I've gone back and forth with GoDady and they won't come clean to what they did and won't put me back on the server (or whatever they did) I was on

I have Windows hosting, linux hosting, and even the new Grid hosting - it's the same on all of them

So now I'm hosting my sites out of my house and the only thing I'm using godaddy for anymore is email and DNS :(

but my sites are very fast and this is with basic cable internet :) http://www.backyard-workshop.com

You have given yourself enough reasons to quit Godaddy.....Your site link gives btw:

Hi all,

If you don't mind I'll come straight to business with this problem because it's driving me nuts. We're having 1 small/medium sized Joomla + Virtuemart website for one of our customers which contains 7618 products. Now you could say 'this must be a piece of cake for the server', well it isn't. By every request PHP eats up 90% of the CPU for about 1~2 seconds and then it hits the garbage collection. I did some benchmarking yesterday with ab, configured with 7 concurrent requests and the load was 5.80 (5 min based).

If you ask me this load is unnecessary high. I was able reproduce this problem with just a stock Joomla installation (downloaded from joomla.org); I've tested this on 3 machines, 2 Virtual Machines and 1 dedicated machine and all are giving me the same results. I've tried CentOS to see if it was distro specific but the results were still the same, so it can't be distro specific. I also did some tests to see if it was PHP version specific (you never know with PHP) and installed 5.3 and again, that was also not the problem.

I've also tried Joomla with some caching (memcached/apc/file) options but still the load remains.
Debug results:

By the sound of it you did not test your site.
Doing the above test you will find that you have stuffed that page with so many LARGE images that I am not surprised about your problem.
And not only the LARGE images footprint.
For a single page, too many other inclusions as well I would think.

Thank you for your answer on this problem but there are certain sentences which doesn't make any sense to me, for example 'Doing the above test you will find that you have stuffed that page with so many LARGE images that I am not surprised about your problem.'. For my understanding (and I'm doing this job for quite a long time) this has nothing to do with PHP because this is static content.

Lighttpd is not generating this high load, PHP does. For my understanding PHP doesn't participate in this request cycle, please correct me if I'm wrong. When I disable my fastcgi handler in lighttpd the static content (images) still get served so this is not the big problem, nor the concurrent requests.

Please don't get me wrong, I don't want to sound wiseacre but these things have nothing to do with the high load on the server. The high load starts when a user visits the Joomla-based website (clean-install).

(kinda offtopic, joomlaperformance.com gives me a error while testing the site):
MySQL server has gone away SQL=SELECT m.*, sum(case when p.published=1 then 1 else 0 end) as cnt\nFROM jos_menu AS m\nLEFT JOIN jos_menu AS p ON p.parent = m.id\nWHERE m.menutype=\'mainmenu\' AND m.published=\'1\' AND m.access <= \'0\'\nGROUP BY m.id ORDER BY m.parent, m.ordering<br />

Hi,

I'm still running 1.5.6, so maybe that is the problem. This site has been up for almost 3 years now, and our site performance precipitously dropped a couple of weeks ago. Before I go further, here is the site link:
http://www.nccameraclub.com/

The problem is not the server (http://www.fullspectrumia.com) as other Joomla sites on this server run fine. I have run the site through the performance tool at joomlaperfrmance.com, but I'm not sure what to make of it. The biggest problem seems to be the Generation Time, but I have no idea how our site could be affecting that. I thought it might the the MySQL DB, but the site is still horrifically slow even on the Administrator login page to the back end! There should be little or no DB access there at all. I have also tried running complex manual queries myself. One of the most complex ones that the site ever uses took all of 102ms.

What causes "Generation Time" issues? Does anyone have any idea what else could be causing our problem. As I said earlier - this change was precipitous. It would be difficult for me to "roll back" the site to an earlier backup as it is for our Camera Club and we are continually adding content. I certainly could update to the latest revision of Joomla, but I've been operating under "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" up until now.

FWIW, I have many years of professional programming experience, although my PHP & MySQL work has really only been for the last 3 years or so. I would GREATLY appreciate any help that anyone can offer.

Here is the output from ww.joomlaperformance.com though I'm not sure how the formatting will screw this up:

Generation time is how long it takes the server to put together everything to send to the browser. Generally, it's PHP and MySQL. Enable debugging and see how many queries you're getting on the homepage. That should give a clue as to where the problem is, but looking at the site, it shouldn't be the number of queries.

And 1.5.6 has some pretty bad security issues. I would upgrade immediately.

Thanks for replying Doyle. I will look into it, but I somehow don't think it's the number of queries, because, as I said, I even have that slowdown on the admin login page loading. That shouldn't be doing much in the way of DB access or PHP. In fact I have done some complex MySQL queries manually that respond very quickly (~100ms), so I'm pretty sure it is not the DB.

I enabled debugging and have included the output below (modified to protect sensitive data only in some of the queries). This is the output from the admin user area just after enabling debugging in Global Configuration. You will notice that the delay appears to be in initialization??? I'm not sure what that means and what I should do next, so again, any help is appreciated.

I do plan to upgrade very soon. I hope to solve this slowdown problem first as I'm worried that I might exacerbate things by upgrading while I'm having these other problems, as well as I need to get the site working better for the users as soon as possible. How gnarly/dangerous is it to do the upgrade? I want to back up the site completely first to offline storage - just to be safe...

Here is the debug output I mentioned above:

Well our support guy at our host found our problem today. Hopefully this might help at least some of those looking here with a similar problem...

It turned out to be a stale IP address in our server's resolv.conf file. Since he was unable to reproduce a similar problem on any of the other sites on this sever, including a few Joomla sites, it seems that there is likely something in our site that is performing a reverse-DNS lookup on a visitor for some reason. That's a bit scary, but since it happens on every page, even the admin pages, it should not be too hard to find. I just wish I had a better idea of what exactly to look for.

In any event, I will be upgrading the site, so there is also the possibility that either the upgrade itself, or more likely the upgrades to the extensions that will inevitably also need upgrading might end up fixing the problem. I'd rather be certain about it though.

Anyhow, thanks again for the help. If anyone has thoughts on the reverse-DNS thing, please let me know!

Well my client's site can now now take over 15 minutes to load. 15 minutes-that's right. minutes. The back end takes that much again. Once there it takes that long to load any page...if it will do it at all that is. I'm stuck at the minute. I need to get in to the back end but just enabling an option to see if it works, which would take maybe 5-6 seconds can take 2 hours. Weird thing is the server doesn't time out which must mean it is interacting with the browser but real slow.

I'm on a GoDaddy Linux shared server with Joomla 1.5.22. Awhile back, my site started getting really slow, particularly after 9pm EST. I'd go on to make some site edits, and Google Chrome will say the site is not found. Then it will come back up, be fine for 10-15 minutes. Then be no found again. Of course, right when I'm doing something important.

I know enough to make the site work. I'm not good with code, and am definitely no guru. Some feel it's a GoDaddy problem, but others seem to be having issues too? The site did this, btw, before I moved up to 1.5.22 so I don't think it was the upgrade.

My site is module heavy. http://www.PolkaDotBanner.com

I'm hoping someone here comes up with an answer that will help. Based on GoDaddy forums, I've changed the htaccess, upgraded the site/modules, and run Trace routes.

Not posted for a while as have been investigating this.
It is a hosting problem. The site ran fine on a free hostingset up. The host (Red Fox) have said they have a php issue on some servers. This is not a Joomla related problem for me.

So I got the following reply back from GoDaddy today. I am not skilled enough to do this, nor do I know for sure this is the real problem. Thoughts?

I have reviewed your hosting account and there are no known issues that would cause the type of error you are describing. If the error is intermittent you may wish to call us during times when it is happening. If you can provide steps to duplicate your issue along with the exact text of any error message you are receiving we would be able to review your account further.

In most cases, slow performance on a database driven web site is the result of too many database connections being made by the site code or the database itself needing to be optimized. I recommend that you review the code for the site to ensure that it is making as few connections as possible in order to retrieve the data, and that those connections are being closed properly.

You can improve performance by optimizing the fields and tables of your database.

I am on linux - I have since moved my largest site off of GoDaddy (it is now running smoothly, very fast, and no issues). There is a forum on GoDaddy where some of us have been posting about our Joomla woes. The only thing is that they only make visible the posts they want. Over half (if not more) of the posts are never made visible to the public. Being on the forum, I get the posts as soon as they are emailed, so I see the others who are having problems. It's been said that GoDaddy has a bad "node." I don't know what a node is or if that is the problem, but it seems to only be affecting certain ones. You may be on a server without the problem. I still have 4 other Joomla sites on my GoDaddy hosting, but they are insignificant compare to the other and haven't suffered as much (or maybe they have stayed small because of the problem?) I plan to move them all as I have time.

I am having the same issue - I'm on a GoDaddy shared Linux account running Joomla 1.5.22 on all of my sites. Like others, I've recently noticed my website loading times slowing down to a crawl. I emailed them today and received this response:

Thank you for contacting Online Support. It appears you are having issues with the load speed of your hosted websites. Upon inspecting your hosting account underneath whimsicaldragonfly.com, it does appear that you are running on an older hosting platform, so to speak. To put it in perspective, our newer hosting accounts, or 4GH hosting accounts, are fourth-generation hosting. Your hosting right how is first-generation hosting.

In order to move you to our 4GH hosting, it will take some effort, however, it will help you in the end. The first step would be to enable SSH on your hosting plan. By enabling SSH, it will move your hosting to the data center that allows for a migration to 4GH, which offers improved performance. For more information, see 4GH Frequently Asked Questions.

When you enable SSH, it will change your database servers, so you will need to update your Joomla configuration files to point to the new database servers.
To Enable SSH on Your Linux Shared Hosting Account

1. Log in to your Account Manager.

2. From the Products section, click Web Hosting.

3. Next to the hosting account you want to use, click Launch.

4. In the Settings section of the Hosting Control Center, click the SSH icon.

5. Type your Country Code, Phone Number, and Extension (if applicable) in the corresponding fields and click Enable.

NOTE: SSH requires a strong password. If prompted to change your password, click Change Password, type a new password, and click OK.

6. We call the phone number provided within 10 minutes. Once the connection is established, an automated message plays a message containing a PIN. Type the PIN number into the You will be called with your PIN field and click Verify.

Once verified, it may take 24-72 hours for SSH to be enabled for your account. During this time, you are locked out from the account as it is moved to a new server. See Using SSH to Connect to Your Linux Shared Hosting Account for information on how to connect to your account using SSH.

TIP:If you did not receive the call, or have entered the wrong pin, repeat the steps above to receive a new call and a different pin. You can attempt to complete the process three times per 24 hours.

Once the hosting is finished migrating to the correct data center, you would then want to migrate your hosting to the 4GH hosting. This is how you would do that:

If you currently use a Shared hosting account, you can migrate it to a 4GH™ account

NOTE: When migrating to a 4GH account, you cannot switch your hosting account's operating system. However, after the account migrates, you can switch it.

To Upgrade to 4GH

1. Log in to your Account Manager.

2. From the Products section, click Web Hosting.

3. Click the domain name you want to use.

4. Go to the Edit Account Details tab.

5. From the Plan menu, select the new 4GH plan you want to use.

6. Click Save Changes.

7. Complete any necessary purchases.

This migration could take up to 72 hours as well. However, by the time you are completed with the process of moving to 4GH, you will see an improvement in the speed of your hosted websites.

Please let us know if we can help you in any other way.
A good reminder - I totally forgot to enable SSH. I hope this helps anyone else having similar issues who has an older GoDaddy account.

I definitely will. I gave them a call last night - they're upgrading me to 4gh while enabling SSH. That should cut 1-3 days off the total move-over time. It's still pending transfer as of now.

This thread was started 3 years ago by Markstein, who did not respond after his first few messages until over a year later (on after 4 pages of posts had been generated). I think we can safely accept anyone posting to this thread is not Hijacking it any more than someone getting into an rusty old fighter plane in abandoned in the jungles of Vietnam could be accused of hijacking an aeroplane.

Good news and bad news... 4gh doesn't seem to have limited any of the functionality of my websites - JCE, Akeeba Backup, Virtuemart, slideshows, galleries, etc. The big problem was a 403 Forbidden error for every site. I tried resolving it on my own - changing permissions and the like. Nothing I tried worked so I opened a ticked with GoDaddy. It took them two days to get back to me (but only a day or so until my sites were back up and accessible) - and all they could tell me is that was some kind of PHP problem. I called in once and the rep said they were trying different changes with the main .htaccess file - no changes have been made to any of my .htaccess files as far as I can tell. If anyone has to go through this upgrade, beware your site might be down for a day or two. I would advise opening a ticket or calling right away if you get the 403 error.

The good news is overall my sites are loading faster. I'm keeping tabs on it though - there are slow loads here and there. I'll update again if it continues.

I apologize for the short post ... broke my wrist last week.

One of my client's asked me to recreate his current site using a CMS so they could edit the articles. And now complaining it is running far slower than his static site.

He wants to see if the problem with his hosting (network Solutions) is that they are using Shared Hosting. Looking for an opinion before he buys.

in the index.php of your template you can disable the download for users only just writing as follows:

Code: Select all

<?php
// Remove mootool sripts for guest, registered and admin
    $user =& JFactory::getUser();
    if ($user->get('guest') == 1 or $user->usertype == 'Registered' or $user->usertype == 'Super Administrator') {
        $headerstuff = $this->getHeadData();
        $headerstuff['scripts'] = array();
        $this->setHeadData($headerstuff);
    }
?>
just for seeing how fast can be your site, well, try a simple test (no risk at all! so be sure!)

Markstein wrote:Hello everyone,

I have been creating a website using Joomla 1.5.0 which is wonderful except for the fact that the site is loading extremely slow. The website is located at:

http://www.appliednetsec.net

It seems the server host (Dreamhost.com) thinks it is a Joomla issue as they said they have uploaded some static pages and they load instantly. Unfortunately, the joomla site can take upwards of 50 - 60 seconds to load. :eek:

Below you will find the information gathered from running the JTS-post : Joomla! Forum Post Assistant. I appreciate the help as it is much needed at this point.

Thank you,

Mark

Problem Description:
http://www.appliednetsec.net loads VERY slow.

Actions Taken To Resolve:
Been in contact with Dreamhost.com who has supposedly cleaned up the server to improve performance.
Enable Caching via the Global Configuration which did not help. It also stopped the sub items of (the solutions button) from opening.
