Joomla 1.6 upgrading FAQ

Post by Tonie » Sat Jan 22, 2011 9:07 am

As always with new Joomla versions, it is not clear for people if they should upgrade or not. This small FAQ will give some information regarding upgrades so it will make it easier for people to decide what they should do.

For the moment, it's a work in progress. New items will be added

Question: how long will Joomla 1.5 and 1.6 be supported?

Joomla 1.5 is branded a Long Term Support Release (LTS)and will have support until the beginning of april 2012. Joomla 1.6 is a standard support release, and will be supported until august 2011. Joomla 1.7 should be released in july 2011. More about the development strategy can be found here:

Question: will extensions for Joomla 1.5 (components/modules/plugins) work on Joomla 1.6?

Generally speaking is that all extensions need at least minor changes to extensions to work on Joomla 1.6. If an extension is coded in the 1.5 MVC style and does not use the Access Control List (ACL) extensively, the changes are very likely to be small. Each extension developer listed at has the opportunity to mark their extensions as Joomla 1.6 ready.

Question: How will migration go for future releases of Joomla?

An imported will be worked on for the next release of Joomla. More information regarding future upgrades can be found here: ... uture.html
