Help! I can't rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess and gets 404 error

Post by bronwyn » Mon May 07, 2007 12:03 am

Tried renaming htaccess.txt to .htaccess but I always get a message that the name .htaccess is already taken.  Also, whenever I click any of my links, I get a 404 error message.  What should I do?  I can't even find the .htaccess in my public_html folder so I could delete and do it over.  Please help!  Salamat po.

please check your folder like doing $ ls -la in the command line. if theres .htaccess do delete it and start renaming it the htaccess.txt .

do you rename it using the command line? SSH? or some webbase?

This threat is pretty old already. But I wish any body who still need to do will know the easiest way. htaccess.txt can not be manually renamed.

The easiest way to rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess, I used Ms-Dos command.

the command syntax is like this;
rename htaccess .htaccess (press Enter)
you will see that the file has rename.
Then, now upload the .htacess into your webfolder(Filemanager etc..). This works for me.
------------to make clearer--------
1. If you are using a web hosting, then download the htaccess.txt to your PC. Assuming that you know the exact directory of your file
2. get the cmd, and locate the directory where your htaccess.txt
3. rename it, using the syntax above
4. upload the file into the server, and see if it works. If not, download the existing htaccess.txt, keep it safe locally. And then, delete it from your filemanager.

Hi
if you are working online and using host control panel like CPanel or direct admin

###########################

The most common mistake:

for example maybe in CPanel file manager you don't fill show hidden files and the file ".htaccess" exists but you can't see it

###########################

change your file manager setting to show hidden files

:pop Please be patient, This text is written for very beginner users of JOOMLA

After Install Filezilla client

Follow this steps :
  • step 1 : connect to your host via filezilla and go to public_html folder and look up for ".htaccess" and "htaccess.txt"
  • step 2 : If both files, or each of them ( ".htaccess" and "htaccess.txt" ) found Delete files. go to step 4 and follow next steps
  • step 3 : If none or one of the files did not exist just go to step 4 and follow next steps
  • step 4 : Download latest version of your site joomla in your pc, for example if your site is on joomla 1.5 download latest version of 1.5 or if your site is on joomla 3.x in this time download joomla 3.2 to your PC
  • step 5 : open downloaded package and copy the "htaccess.txt" (that is latest version) to your desktop
  • step 6 : connect to your site via ftp by Filezilla and go to Public_htm and upload new "htaccess.txt" (in step 5) , to Public_htm
  • step 7 : finally after step 6 finished , restart Filezilla then reconnect to your site ftp and go to Public_htm then find "htaccess.txt", right click on it and select rename, and change "htaccess.txt" to ".htaccess"

Congratulations
You've successfully solved the problem

If you are using Linux OS on your computer and Faced with this problem

Most likely you're not a rookie

so you have two sample way

Part one : connect to your site ftp via Filezilla.
 go to public_html.
also download last joomla version that installed on your site .
extract downloaded file and go to it, then press left "Ctrl+H" on your keyboard to see hidden files like: ".htaccess" .
then rename "htaccess.txt" file to ".htaccess" in your computer .
drag ".htaccess" file from Linux file manager ( by click and keeping left click of the mouse ) and drop It in filezilla.
 that opened public_html folder in the beginning

Result one : If the file has been uploaded successfully,
your problem solved :D

Result two : if program show a message that this file already exist in this location and give you some choice, choose the options that replace new file by old one,
when that file has been uploaded
Your problem is solved :D
