Re: Site is down....
Seems it was permissions on the "logs" directory.

I have exactly the same problem (only with chrome) and do not know how to solve it. I am a rookie and did not find more information about this topic. Help please. The problem appeared when I upgraded to joomla 1.7. www.sergiogaviria.com

Re: Site is down....
Hi,
Just updated to 1.7 on a couple of site that we maintain and everything run fin to start with. Then today one customer contacted us for the above error. The error shows up when Joomla needs to log an error (in our case they entered the wrong password in admin.) The site runs ok on the front end even with this error showing, you just can't login to admin or front end.
To clear the problem you need to set file permissions of your log folder so that joomla can create the error log, everything returns to normal again on the site then. Or it did for us:)
Remember to protect your log files again afterwards.
Ecocr.

Re: Site is down....
Thanks ecocr. I tried with 777 permissions, did not work. I also tried with the configuration.php file (path log and tmp), did not work. The error show, sometimes, in explorer and chrome. In Firefox shows no error. Me queda la posibilidad de reinstalar. Thanks.

Re: Site is down....
What version did you upgrade from? Was it the most recent 1.6 version or an older?
It's probably just the browser caching screwing up. Explorer is stupid, even caching php pages..
Just do a browser "hard reset" (ctrl + F5) and it should be fine.

Re: Site is down....
Thanks DanMikkelsen. The problem was when upgrading 1.6.4 to 1.6.7. I did it wrong because he must first upgrade to 1.6.5. The problem happens mainly with google chrome. I accepted your recommendation with control + f5 and it does not work. Thanks again.

Re: Site is down....
In my case, it was the the browser cookies which were causing the problem. How or why, no idea, but clearing them resolved the problem!
See also this topic.
That said, it seems to me that there still is some kind of problem in Joomla... how can a wrong cookie cause an error about LOGGING to be displayed, when logging should actually be working fine?
Or does logging still not work, but deleting the cookie just made the actual error go away so that there is no need for logging?

Re: Site is down....
I can confirm that clearing the cookies solved this error for me also.

Re: Site is down....
ecocr above was right on! I had the same experience where cookies would clear the issue for awhile, but then the issue would reappear. This also happened to me across all browsers. In the end what I did was point to the correct logs folder and made sure that the error.php file would get created. Once I corrected this issue it immediately worked even without clearing the cookies first.
Thanks ecocr, I have been dealing with this for over a month.

Re: Site is down....
I'm having the exact same issue.. HOWEVER, it only appears on IE, and ONLY when the site is referenced with a "www." prefix. Use the domain name without www., and it works fine.
(try goldappl.com with and without the www).
It was fine a few days ago... no changes made, and this appears. Clearing cookies on the clients did not help. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Site is down....
What finally cleared everything up for me and works on several hosts (GoDaddy & iPage) is setting the folder paths to the settings below:
./logs
./tmp
./logs
./tmp

Re: Site is down....
hmm, I disabled the debug plugin, it causes the error above, if the file size of log files exceeded. Or kill the joomla log files.
