¨error the xml response that was returned from the server is invalid¨
Hello all
I know this is a known installation problem, I was only able to install Joomla 1.5 on ´localhost´ by ignoring the ´sample files´ button. I was however able to install Joomla on a Fasthosts server with no problems whatsoever, even when pressing the sample files button!
Local PC´s data:
PHP Built on: Linux vw 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Sun Sep 23 19:50:39 UTC 2007 i686
Database Version: 5.0.38-Ubuntu_0ubuntu1.1-log
Database Collation: utf8_general_ci
PHP Version: 5.2.1
Web Server: Apache/2.2.3 (Ubuntu) PHP/5.2.1
Web Server to PHP interface: apache2handler
Joomla! Version: Joomla! 1.5.0 Production/Stable [ Takriban ] 5-October-2007 21:00 GMT
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.6) Gecko/20061201 Firefox/2.0.0.6 (Ubuntu-feisty)
Thanks Will

I assume from your description above that the installation on your local machine is ok apart from the Sample Data not loading, is that correct?
Provided you have not added any content to the basic installation you may like to try manually adding the Sample Data as described in the Installation Manual for a manual installation.
summarized as follows:
open the /installation/sql/mysql/ directory and
open the file sample_data.sql in an appropriate text/html editor (not notepad Windows User's) and
do a Find and Replace of the prefix #__ (has followed by 2 underscores) and replace with jos_ (or the prefix you have selected for your database tables) and
save the file ensuring it is saved as UTF-8 encoding.
Then open your MySQL admin manager (PHPMyAdmin or other) and import the file into your database.
You should then have the sample data installed.

ps please use the latest Nightly Build there have been a number of updates since the release of RC3 and many of this type of issue have been resolved.

Re: ¨error the xml response that was returned from the server is invalid¨
Here we go again with this installation error. The last time I installed a 1.5RC3 nightly build on Ubuntu (about a week ago) it resolved this problem with the published RC3 package. However, I just DL'd last nights build and it's back. I'm okay with doing the manual install of sample data (I really don't need or want it anyway), but this seems to be a recurring problem with 1.5 so I thought I would post a note here. I'd be happy to post a tracker as well if that's appropriate.

moved from 1.5 Installation as suggestion of possible recurring bug.

Re: ¨error the xml response that was returned from the server is invalid¨
I had this issue also today, it was driving me nuts (it took me several hours before I found a quick fix).
If you have installed Joomla in the following folder: /var/www/html, then do the following:
cd /var/www/html
rm configuration.php
touch configuration.php
su (become root)
cd /var/www
chmod -R ugo+rw html
Now, start your browser and the installation should work now.
It has something to do with write permissions (probably the write permissions of the root folder /var/www)
This is a quick fix, I didn't care about security issues.

Re: ¨error the xml response that was returned from the server is invalid¨
Interesting. Before installing, I renamed configuration.php-dist to configuration.php and set its permissions to 777 (it's a local test site). I also set the root directory (/var/www/joomla_trunk_svn) to 777 also. The only thing I believe I did not do was "touch configuration.php" and I left the rest of the directory tree with the permissions that came out of the tar file. The installation script was giving me an all "green" indication. Perhaps there is some new subdirectory that needs different permissions than those given in the tar file. It would be of some value to delve into this deeper and find out which one(s) I think.
I personally don't need the example content for developing extensions. But the average webmaster might, and this quick fix will worry the average webmaster. This probably implies a permission issue somewhere in the directory tree, and for that reason this discovery definitely is valuable.
I suspect that this would not be a problem in a local Windows installation. I don't recall ever having this occur with any of my Windows local installs. I am transitioning to testing in a Linux environment, and this happened on my first installation in Ubuntu.

Re: ¨error the xml response that was returned from the server is invalid¨
Hi
You do not need to rename and use the configuration.php-dist file for a standard browser installation unless the configuration.php cannot be created during the normal process. Then it should only be introduced at the end of the process as detailed in the Installation Manual and in the tips within the installer itself.
A manually created configuration.php file is only required "up front" when doing the full manual installation.
When doing a browser installation and the onfiguration.php is not writable warning is highlighted, you would create an empty file at the end of the process and then copy and paste the displayed list of variables and settings displayed during step7 of the install process OR manually edit the settings in the configuration.php-dist file using the displayed settings in Step 7 and then rename the file to configuration.php.
Globally setting file permissions to 777 is a security hazard and should not be adopted.

Re: ¨error the xml response that was returned from the server is invalid¨
Yes, it may have had something to do with being lazy and just renaming and changing permissions on the provided configuration.php-dist file rather than pasting the content provided at the end of the browser installation into a new file. Regarding security, I would never and have never changed permissions to 777 on a file that is so critical on a public site. This was on a local site (used for testing on my personal system), not one that is accessible via the Internet.
FYI, my contribution to this thread began as a "heads up" to the J! team about a possible issue that I encountered during installation of RC3 on a Linux machine. It's not an issue for me or my sites at all.

Re: ¨error the xml response that was returned from the server is invalid¨
To whom it may concern,
There are bugs in RC3 that really should be fixed and patched into the download file thats on the site. Im having a horrible time installing it.
I even switched to SVN version and still get a blank screen after installing sample data.
My install:
apache runs as www-data user/group
i changed my dir to be owned by me.www-data
then i changed perms to 755, tried 775, 777. only one that worked was 775
this got me passed the annoying 'xml error' only to be rewarded by a blank screen on the next step.

Did you try any of these ideas mentioned, above? For example, the ideas fokker50 raised? Are you only having trouble installing the sample data? (That is the subject of this thread, if I am understanding correctly.)

If people are having issues with the installation, please post a step-by-step procedure of how the problem can reproduced. Screenshots are also helpful as are error messages from the webserver or phps' error log.

Re: ¨error the xml response that was returned from the server is invalid¨
I got that one time. Gosh, I'm trying to remember what I did.redfoxx wrote: now im getting a redirect to this believe it or not

I believe (?) I was moving a website and there were rows in the session table. Once I deleted those rows, the problem went away? (That might have been the time I had a blank screen in the frontend and backend, though.)
Do you have any of your SEF URL options turned on? If so, turn them off and rename your .htaccess back to htaccess.txt and see if that helps.
But, tcp is right. We are now in the Developer Q&T area - not the General v 1.5 area. The reporting needs to be more precise as it can better enable them to resolve the problem.
It would be great to have this moved back to "General" so that we can work together better. We are now not talking about a bug, necessarily, (or one that we would report, yet, if we were in the General area.)
Thanks,
Amy

Re: ¨error the xml response that was returned from the server is invalid¨
I was getting this error as well when trying to install the sample data, I was able to resolve the issue by setting register_globals = Off in the php.ini.
This was on ubuntu 7.10 with XAMPP for Linux, with default installation on both.

Re: ¨error the xml response that was returned from the server is
This thread is rated very high for a specific search that I used trying to resolve my problem. Wanted to share...
Had a problem with installing the sample data as well... but on a virtual server on a system where I already performed about 5 successful Joomla installs using this method. Figuring it was not my system, I decided to start over. Dropped the MySQL database completely and created a new one. Then I deleted the configuation.php file and created a new, blank configuration.php file and changed permissions to 777. Started up the installed and everything worked.
Bottom line, if you are reading this trying to figure out the problem, it is not hard to "start over", you only have to wipe out configuration.php and the mysql database. Try that and see if it works.

Re: ¨error the xml response that was returned from the server is
Hi,
I had this issue today, relating to an install of version 1.5.11 - running locally on a laptop in Windows. Not had this problem before, with numerous versions of 1.5.x, though having read through most of the earlier threads - I see it has been an issue that has come and gone in the past.
Running
1. There was no flagged problem writing to configuration.php during the install
2. There was no error when inputting or not inputting FTP data.
3. The error message only occurred when the Sample Data button was pressed.
4. Not loading the sample data did not result in a further error. The Install was fine - just no data.
If you have a similar error - fulfilling the four conditions above.
The solution that worked for me was the one offered by humvee - the second post in this thread.
re: import the data manually by find/replacing #__ with jos_ in the sample_data.sql
thanks for the advice.
I'm adding this post as there are many cases of the problem appearing with lots of fixes, many of which don't work in Windows. It might save someone the time of trawling though them all.
Carry on!

Hello everyone.
I've run into the same problem, and then tried with the workaround of copying the modified sample_data.sql into the database, as it that seams to be working for almost everyone. But at that point I found an error no one has described yet. This particular error appears in phpMyAdmin:
consulta SQL:

Re: ¨error the xml response that was returned from the serve
Also experienced this issue - HERE'S HOW I FIXED IT! Posting this due to it ranking so high in google for the error message.
I am running XAMPP 1.7.3a on fedora 12. I have tested this fix with the same XAMPP install on ubuntu and openSuse distros and it also fixed it.
The issue was that in my php.ini file, i had: 'display_errors = On' - this showed up in the initial check screen as an issue, but i ignored it as i'm very experienced with Joomla! and never had a problem with this previously.
When i turned it to: 'display_errors = Off' - and restarted my LAMPP server to pickup the php.ini changes... worked. Turn it on... kicks the error! Most retail hosting servers have this off, thus the reason it works on those hosts.
HOPE THIS HELPS!

Manual Install of php, MySql, Apache in Windows 7 32-bit and the solution below solved this issue for a "localhost" install.

I had similar problem. I had no problem installing Sample data with IE8, only with Firefox.
Its sufficient to put following line of code under comment:
$registry->makeNamespace('application');
Now, code should look :
In file /installation/installer/controller.php , function execute($task) ,
change code :
//$registry->makeNamespace('application');
$mainframe->setUserState('application.cookietest', 1);

In file /installation/installer/controller.php , function execute($task) ,
change code :
//$registry->makeNamespace('application');
$mainframe->setUserState('application.cookietest', 1);

Re: ¨error the xml response that was returned from the serve
I have had the "Error XML response that was returned from the server is invalid" when trying to install the sample data of Joomla 1.5.
I have solved it in the following way:
Installing Joomla I had seen that in the initial check screen there was a warining: My PHP configuration had the "
"Display errors" parameter "On". Joomla indicated on that screen that the parameter should be configured at "Off". Despite Joomla installation said the setting the parameter to Off was not mandatory, in my case that was the reason why I couldn't be able to install the sample data.
I did the following actions:
1) find php.ini file
2) edit php.ini and search inside "Display_errors". I saw that in my case was written something like "Display_errors: On" (if you are a newbe consider that you will find more than one time the "Display_errors" in the php.in file. You have to modify that one that is not preceded by ";").
3) Modify the parameter value: "Display_errors: Off" and save the file.
4) Restart xampp
5) Try again to install Joomla. This time I succeed installing the sample data without problems!
I was installing Joomla 1.5 on Ubuntu Linux 10.04.

Re: ¨error the xml response that was returned from the serve
What I have found is if you change the 'TYPE=MyISAM' to ENGINE=MyISAM in both the joomla.sql and sample_data.sql files it seems to fix this issue ... took me about 20 tries but I got it right. Watch out for using "Replace All" as it seems to screw things up a bit, use the "Find Next" - "Replace" method to make sure the spacing etc doesn't go all weird.
Hope this helps

Re: ¨error the xml response that was returned from the serve
Thanks everyone for reply. None of the solutions worked for me. I uninstalled xampp 1.7.4 and installed 1.7.3. It works fine for xampp 1.7.3.

Re: ¨error the xml response that was returned from the serve
I used all the solutions mentioned above but nothing worked for me..i am also getting xml server error in 1.5.22 to 1.5 RC4 version but it is not shown for 1.7
& If try to install the sample data manually by importing or inserting script, it shows an error ,
personally i feel i found a link in sample_data.sql..i think this link is not working...
also its(1.5) works fine on my desktop pc...I installed 1.5 again on my desktop for just verifing..but it works on my Desktop properly
The solution in which one of the user mentioned to replace engine instead of type...is working installation errors on 1.5 RC version...
