Newbie in Joomla but not in Web Design...

Post by mixer25 » Mon Dec 12, 2011 10:29 pm

:-[

I am trying to help a friend who has a Joomla site in 1.0.13 Stable [ Sunglow ] here is the problem...

first off I wish to upgrade him to the latest Joomla, but not sure if I can just upgrade as don't want to throw the site all out and have loads of coding to do etc...

Secondly, I have all passwords etc to ftp server, and can get in admin but not sure if I need to access the database etc for an upgrade?

Guess I am just worried bout messing this up unless relativley easy to update?

Your info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Have a look at the server requirements for Joomla 1.7.3, make sure his server meets or exceeds them.
Make a list of the extensions his 1.0.13 site uses...

See if those same extensions have versions valid in 1.6+...

If the site is pretty simple, It might indeed be easier to just start with a "blank canvas" in 1.7.3 and cut and paste the articles in.

Iff the site is not so simple, It might STILL be easier, but a list of the extensions posted here might help us give you better advice.

thanks for reply.. where would the extensions be?

Here is the site, its pretty basic

Does Joomla use a database or anything? as I don't have access to this, only the FTP etc, as original web designer is long gone?

One of main reasons to keep as is and not move to upgrade is the amount of hits this site gets, which would end if moved.

So in an ideal world would like to upgrade them move the site to new hosting.

I cannot detect ANY extensions being used, and other than some malformed html here and there, I can't think of any reason to bother with an upgrade.

If it were me, I would ask the host for a backup of the complete site (files and database) to keep in the event the site gets defaced.

hi many thanks again for reply...

Ok so if I didn't upgrade I would need to make sure the hosting I move to supported Joomla 1.0 still?

Also if I cannot get the backup of whole site (due to web designer long gone) is there a way I can get from administrator panel?

Thanks

The designer can't prevent the the host from backing up the files and the database for you.

You probably can't, which is why I suggested contacting the host.
one "slim" possibility is if you can get an old copy of "JoomlaPack" (Now Akeeba Backup) which would permit you to backup the entire site...
