Remove article date in URL?

Post by jcrimmel » Sun Jan 15, 2012 4:39 pm

This must be an easy fix and I'm sure I'm over looking the option somewhere, but would someone care to tell me how to remove the article's date out of the URL as well as the index.php? Thia happens with SEF URL on and off.

This is because you didn't set the alias for your menu item.

I'm having the same issue with the date in the URL.
Screen Shot 2012-02-10 at 7.52.48 PM.png
I did enter aliases for all my articles and menu items.

How can I get rid of these so they are without the numbers?

Bingo. I had put External URL's instead of text placeholders for my main menu items.

Awesome!!! Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for the suggestion. I has created an alias for my articles and categories but missed it on two of my menu items. One of the menu items was an external URL. I couldn't find an absolute fix but I just added the URL of the sub-menu item into the link of the external URL menu item. It removed the date but it does make that link click-able. At least the date is gone now! Good luck.

Hello,

I know this thread is old but I have found a solution to this and you are able to keep your external link for the menu item.

Go to the menu item you are having a problem with and change it from external link to text separator.

Delete the date from the alias box and save, not save & quit.

Once it saves, change it back to an external link and for the URL, use #

Your menu item will no longer have the date and will work the way you want.

The sub-menu should be the same way.

1. Go to the menu / sub-menu item you are having the problem with
2. Change the Menu Item Type to Text Separator
3. Delete anything that is in the Alias box
4. Click Save.
5. Change Menu Item Type back to what you want (external link, single article, etc.)
6. Save & Close

I've had the same problem with the article date in my URL. I did this and it solved the problem.

If you need any further help, let me know and I can assist you with the problem.

This ends my two days of agony of rebuilding the menu item recreating the articles and tweaking the configuration.

I can only speak for Joomla 3.0.3 but I found the fix a good bit easier.

In the Main Menu, the alias is listed directly alongside the menu title. Any alias with a date, simply open that menu item and overwrite the date in the alias field with any text string you want, Save & Close.

Appreciate your post, got me headed in the right direction.

Having the same problem and nothing is working. None of may aliases contain a date and they are all correctly filled out. I'm linking to a component if that makes any difference?

thanks

I was searching online and found this thread - I thought I would give your tip a tryout - and my word - so simple it fixed the date thing - so bizarre that it worked. By the way I'm using joomla 3.1 in case you're wondering! Really cool tip (I'm going to make a note of this in my rednotebook (ubuntu journal)).

Cheers to rjohnson ;D

Thanks rjohnson1990...it worked beautifully. :)

What has me puzzled though, is that I didn't have this problem with 3 out of 5 menu parents that also had # for the external URL. Nonetheless am grateful for such an easy solution.
