Suggest a NEW NAME

Post by masterchief » Fri Aug 19, 2005 3:42 am

The Unnamed CMS Development team would like your help in finding a name for that which was formerly known as Mambo.

Please post your suggestions here keeping in mind:

* it should be easy to remember and spell
* the domain should be available
* the meaning of the word if applicable (for example if it's a swahili word)
* has no trademark or copyright restrictions or prior use (for example, Mambo is also a trademark of Mambo Clothing)

We are open to any suggestions but the Development Teams's will make the final decision on any name.  To prevent domain poaching, we will keep the selection to the name a secret (shhh) until domains, etc, have been secured.

Just to give you some ideas, we were batting around the name Phoenix.  Of course this is used by companies such as those who write the Phoenix BIOS, so alternatives could include phoentic variation such as Feenix that might be more 'available'.

Also, we would like have something a bit fresh, so please no names that have mambo in them, or sound like mambo, or are derivatives of mambo etc.  I like jambo myself as it's swahili for hello, but it's not appropriate for the new name.

I was going to propose Phoenix but saw that it was taken by the other software company. Feenix is a great twist! Rise up from them ashes!

You might also like to choose a name based on compound words, for example, deepblue or coldfusion (obviously those are taken, darn it).

There's really several obvious problems with Jambo ;)

It's very similar to Jango (miro cms), it's part of the name of an existing business ( ;) ), and it rhymes with Mambo :P

I just had a very simple and versatile idea...

Shape.

Shape the web with Shape CMS ;)

Sounds a bit too much like E Coli ;)

Nice meaning tho, although look what happened when Miro considered Mambo to be a city of gold.

Also might want to think of a recursive acronym like GNU.  Can't think of any at the moment.

I'd like to stay away from any funky spelling of words.  For example, I can't see myself looking at the name Feenix without getting shudders (sorry rhuk).

One suggestion I like, though I'm not sure that long term meaning would be sustained:  "Mutiny".

That said, I wish there were the legal resource to go after keeping Mambo.  Miro hasn't finalised the trademark registration for it, and in any case, they are only registering the trademark in Australia.  They also would have a hard time proving that the current code, what currently makes mambo, is their product (stop me if I'm wrong, but how much of current code resembles what they originally released?).  But that's probably a moot point, who could afford *that* legal fight?

I also think that the new name shouldn't be too "lovey dovey".  It's good to suggest friendliness, but we *do* want recognition in the corporate world (I think it's important anyway), and the name selected can have a major impact there.

I'll put my thinking hat on...

anomie (also: anomy)
(an'-uh-mee) n. 1: social instability resulting from a breakdown of standards and values. 2: a feeling of personal unrest stemming from a lack of standards, values, purpose, or ideals. adj. form: anomic (an-nom'-ick) [from Greek, a- "lack of" + nomos "law."]

Mutiny is too political... I think we should stay away from any politically motivated names rising from this debacle, as it will only direct people's thoughts back to what's happened.

Shape! :)

It can be a friendly shape, it can be a pointy shape! eheh

It feels like the kind of minimalist name that is popular these days, and an image formed around that could be very effective...

Also as a noun it has many meanings that make up what this project aims for, such as a framework, a design, etc.

It would give us something to work with that is as simple as the asterisk used for the Mamboflower ;)

Synonyms:  appearance, architecture, aspect, bod, build, cast, chassis, circumscription, configuration, conformation, constitution, construction, contour, cut, embodiment, figure, format, frame, guise, likeness, lineation, lines, look, make, metamorphosis, model, mold, outline, pattern, profile, semblance, shadow, silhouette, simulacrum, stamp, structure, symmetry

Now I promise to stop plugging it ;)

I love many different languages... but one I love the most is latin... and there is nothing better to do in latin than cursing... er.. ahem.. sorry... ;)

seriously though, I like latin, and was thinking maybe since that Mambo is to me like Nike is to shoes... Was thinking in the campaign ad of Nike: Just do it.  In latin one word could mean what a hole sentence in english means, so saying Just do it, would be like simply saying modo.

I think a good idea would be to call it modoCMS, referring to Just a CMS... because that is what it is a simple, yet powerful CMS software... modoCMS :)

It would be like wiping your webserver with silk... ;)

Let's come up with something original. Would really like to see all the hits on google be relating to this CMS instead of being confused between different projects

While my personal preference would be to fight Miro for the name, given that it belongs more to the community, I recognise that what is fair and equiitable may not be achievable in this instance.

However, accepting that there is a need to have a name which is not close to M*mbo, I also feel that we should look at a name which does have a tie-in to the already established reputation of the product.

I like "Mamber" for that reason.  M*mbo users have been calling themselves that for awhile now, and the name is widely known as being  part of the  M*mbo community. It is not trademarked in either the USA or Australia and the .org domain is available.  I feel the name would be instantly recognisable as the project-that-was-and-which-has-been-taken-back-by-the-community.

That's a very good point. Maybe a word should be *created* for the new project, then any search would be sure to turn up the sites directly.

Google is a great example of this, they actually *became* a word in the dictionary! Amazing, really.

There is googly, and googol (a very large number), and maybe a made up word based on an existing word but not some kind of wacky mispelling as vavroom pointed out, that could work.

Saidia, like mambo and jambo, is another beautiful swahili word. It means "to help".

I've also got it registered already (the .org anyway) and am happy to transfer it over. .com directs to cafepress.. go figure.

Cheers,

I say we merge the existing threads, run it for couple of weeks, then make a poll with all the propositions followed by round 2 poll with the finalists of the first.

I like Tango, but I hear it might conflict with an older software project.
Regardless I've registered tangocms.com and tangocms.org
I'll give the registar to the devs if it's chosen.

I've been using this swahili dictionary.
http://www.yale.edu/swahili/

The first swahili word I found (that sounded decent enough and wasn't taken by trademark or by domain name)

Name : Muradi CMS = Swahili for "intention" (it also means "because" and "project")
Domain : Muradi.com = available
The Trademark search on the US Patent and Trademark office returned 0 results for "Muradi"

I'll continue to search.

Problem with that is whilst we are voting a smart person would register the domains.
