hello
one of my customers asked me about running a website with joomla or drupal.
he estimates his number of website visitors around 1000 to 2000 user per day.
we want to use a shared webhosting.
so which one will be suitable for shared hosting and which one may not cause overloading on server?
if you let me i will use your ideas on nitaran.ir

personally I dont think with that kind of visitor you should consider using shared hosting for any one of them.

@subrat
lets say that
- we are limited to a geographical entity like the usa
- we are limited to 'daytime visitors' only ~ 12 hours
- at 2000 visitors per day we will have 166 per hour
- and thats less than 3 visitors per minute
Are you telling Farshid (and the rest of us) that Joomla cannot handle 1 visitor per 20 seconds on a shared hosting?!?

Re: Jooma/Drupal which one has better performance on shared
It would be pushing it, I went from shared host to more powerful shared host with supposed unlimited bandwidth - with under 1000 visitors per day spread over 18 hours got kicked off for hogging resources! Visitors can spend hours on site.
So now on VPS. Content has an impact too... about 500 articles and 5000 items in VM in catalogue only mode - no cart/shopping functions. So not a heavyweight site but still enough to break shared hosting.

@meldgaard I am not saying joomla can't handle that kind of visitor, if that would have been the case then I would have suggested not to go with any of the cms system, but what I said was, with that kind of visitor any cms/site will have issues in shared hosting as your hosting provider will either suspend your site suggest you to upgrade to VPS
Better go for VPS.

Hi there,
1000 or 2000 visitors per days is ok.
You need good hosting with good parameters, also in location where your visitors are ...
You need to tune your Joomla website - use only necesarry extensions, modules ....
Use good cache ... good using of cache is critical ! and sure .... use the newest updated Joomla, extensions.
Before you choose hosting, check their paramters for php, mysql, connections speed, php limit for you ... Do some testing.
If you have good hosting, it can be sometimes better solution that you have own or virtual server in not great provider

Yes correct 100 to 2000 visitor you can go for shared hosting. But as suggested if you are getting a good quality visits is always better to have VPS or dedicated server to improve your website performance.
Regard your question Drupal RAM requirement is minimum 128MB so on shared hosting Joomla is much better. Not most host will allow Drupal on shared hosting/
