Updating the PHP for Joomla 2.5

HEy Guys,
I have a problem with updating my Joomla PHP from version 5.2 to atleast 5.3...
I've searched the internet for solutions, but alls i could find was for specific hosts, whereas my site isn't on a commercial hoster.
Since im a "Joomla Noob", would need some step-by-step instructions :)

THe Joomla version is 2.5 and the current PHP is 5.2.

Hii,
it would have to mean your site is not running on php 5.3. check the php version in the System Information in your Joomla administrator.

first of all tahnk for the fast replys :)

Yes you are right, im not running on PHP 5.3 at the moment. The Server is running on Apache 2.2, and the PHP website provides a PHP package for that.

How can i put that file on the server? DO i need an FTP Client for that? or ist there any"upload and install" function?

What kind of operating system do you have? How is Apache/PHP/Mysql installed? Just by manual download or by the use of software like Xampp?
