Help to make global conf writable

Post by sward53 » Wed Aug 27, 2014 12:26 am

Hello,
I am unable to change global config due to unritable can anyone direct me to the procedure to make it writable for the super administrator, the site was developed by a company that I can no longer contact.
I do have the ftp login details. I understand this is a very old version which we will be moving to a newer version in the future.
Your help is appreciated.
Steve.

What exact version of Joomla do you currently have installed? Since you posted in the Joomla 1.0.x forum, we can assume that it's a v1.0.x installation, but what's the full version number? What is the third number in place of the "x" in v1.0.x?

Good. You have the last version released for the Joomla 1.0.x series. That means you can override the fact that you're "Global Configuration" file is write protected.

Simply log into the back end Administrator interface. Then click on the "Global Configuration" icon. Make whatever changes you need to make and then, before you click on the save icon, be sure to first check the little "Override write protection while saving" box.

That will allow you to then save the "Global Configuration" file changes you've just made when you click on save, even though the file is set to be un-writeable.

Hmm... OK. Take a look at the screenshot below.
Joomla-1.0.15-Global-Config.png
That clearly shows the "Override write protection while saving" check box. Just select that check box before you click on Save. Your "Global Configuration" file will be saved despite the file permission being set as Unwriteable.

I see... Hmm... Are you 100% sure that your Joomla installation is indeed v1.0.15? Check that by going to the administrator main navigation at the top and clicking on: "System" -> "System Info". You should see the following:

Joomla! Version: Joomla! 1.0.15 Stable [ Daytime ] 22 February 2008 23:00 UTC

If you do NOT actually have Joomla v1.0.15 installed but instead, you have some earlier version running... Then the missing check box in question was likely not an available option in whatever older Joomla v1.0.x series you currently have installed.

However, if indeed you do have Joomla v1.0.15 installed... Then I suggest you access your Joomla installation files directly using FTP in order to manually change the file permissions for the "configuration.php" file yourself. Just set that file to be 755 or higher, return to your Joomla Administrator back end interface, and you will then be able to make your changes and save it.

Most likely, once you've saved the "Global Configuration" via a browser within Joomla, the "configuration.php" file will be automatically reset to be unwriteable. But, when you're finished editing the "configuration.php" file, it's wise to double check via FTP that indeed that file has been reset to be unwriteable. If it isn't set as unwriteable, then do that yourself manually. It's a serious security risk to leave your Joomla "configuration.php" file writeable.

If all else fails and you feel confident enough to do so, you could simply copy via FTP the "configuration.php" file to your local PC, manually edit it yourself, and then move it back up into your web hosting account. Of course, before editing any file like that, be sure to make a backup copy of the original "configuration.php" file before making any edits. That way, should you screw up something, you can always restore the original unedited version of your "configuration.php" file back to your Joomla installation.
