SOLVED: Extended Menu - Help needed with levels/highlighting...

Post by FluidDruid23 » Thu Apr 27, 2006 10:19 am

Hi all,

Having some (continuing) problems trying to make Extended Menu work for me!  :(

The tool seems to be great, very powerful etc. but I just can't seem to get it to do exactly what I am after.

Take a look at: http://212.227.82.19/ceka-cms/index.php ... &Itemid=55 to see my issues. This link is, in fact, exactly how I'd like it to be. My problems start when I choose a sub-category of "Unternehmen", such as "Fakten". The highlight then switches to the title on the left menu and I would like it to stay on the "Unternehmen" button at the top.

Ideas, please? I'd be happy to give someone access to the backend if they are willing to help me out... :)

Thanks in advance,

Matt

I have tried messaging the creator direct, with no reply...

Just want to throw this one up the top one more time, as I need to speak with my client in the morning and it was meant to be working by then...  :'(

I'd be interested to know how this is done too.

You can control the highlighting using the "Active Menu Class" parameter.

I set this to "Both" so that I can target the list tag AND the href tag. This allows for more flexibility with the CSS styling.

My question (if you don't mind): how do you assign different class/ID names to your lists (i.e. "mainlevel-button" AND "main_left")? Thanks.

I duplicated the module, so I have one for use at the top (buttons) and one on the left.

Thanks! I think things are working now. Just need to do some fine tuning to the CSS.

Cheers,

I am sorry...I have tried, I really have, to understand this and make it work on my split menus, but I just can't get it!  :-\

Could some kind soul please spare me 5 minutes to talk me through the extended menu/CSS setup to keep a parent highlighted when the child is selected??

Please?!  :'(

No worries, Matt. I was getting just as frustrated but finally sorted things out this weekend!

I'll give a brief walkthrough on how to setup the two menus (for anyone interested) and then walk you through the stylesheet.

Setting up a 2-tier menu (with parent highlighted)
---------------------------------------------------------------------

I have two horizontal menus that reside on top of one another (i.e. like a 2-level tab menu).

Here's how to set the menus up:
1) Install an instance of "Extended Menu" module and name it "Main Menu" (or whatever makes sense to you)
2) Copy that module and name the new menu "Sub Menu"
3) Unpublish Joomla's Main Menu (just to be safe)
4) Next configure the menu settings to match the ones I've indicated in the images (see attached).
5) Reference the position in your template code (I used 'User 9' to ensure that it was unique)

Using the proper CSS styles
---------------------------------------------------------------------

I based my menu model on A List Apart's sliding door tabbed menu (part II):
http://www.alistapart.com/articles/slidingdoors2/

This is a simple menu that allows for dynamic text sizes, rollover highlights and an "Active" state. It works on all browser/platforms I've tested and offers lots of design flexibility. I've stripped out the sliding door code to focus on the highlighting classes but I highly recommend their solution.

Code: Select all

/* This highlights the main menu */
ul#mainlevel-main .mainlevel_current-main a {
     font-weight: bold;
 }

/* This highlights the sub menu */
ul#mainlevel-sub .mainlevel_active-sub,
ul#mainlevel-sub .mainlevel_current-sub {
	font-weight: bold;
  }
/* This keeps the parent in the main menu highlighted */
ul#mainlevel-main .mainlevel_active-main,
ul#mainlevel-main .mainlevel_current-main {
	font-weight: bold;
  }
Note: you could simplify the CSS but I like to be specific with the class hierarchy.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

Thanks for replying.

I have now copied your setting for the 2 Module items. I assume this means I have to have ALL the links I want in the menu itself?

Here's a link to where this should all be happening and isn't:

http://puma.websitewelcome.com/~dbvwint ... &Itemid=29

I would like to be able to click on "Klassische Rentenversicherung" on the right menu and for "Altervorsorge" to remain highlighted to.

Here's my *current* CSS section for the menus. I know it needs amending, but I can't tell how I amend what I have to make this work.  :-[

Code: Select all

/* Main Menu(s) */

a.mainlevel {
text-align: left;
font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
font-size: 11px;
padding-left: 4px;
width: 129px;
display: block;
padding-top: 6px;
padding-bottom: 6px;
border-bottom: 1px dashed #A2A2A2;
border-right: 1px solid #8B8B8B;
border-left: 1px solid #8B8B8B;
text-decoration: none;
font-weight: normal;
color: #666666;
}

/* Hack for displaying correct width in IE */
* html a.mainlevel
{
	width: 135px;
}

a.mainlevel:hover  {
width: 129px;
color: #FF5F00;
font-weight: normal;
text-decoration: none;
border-bottom: 1px dashed #A2A2A2;
}

/* Hack for displaying correct width in IE */
* html a.mainlevel:hover
{
	width: 135px;
}

a.mainlevel#active_menu {
width: 129px;
color: #FFFFFF;
background: #FF5F00;
text-decoration: none;
font-weight: normal;
border-bottom: 1px dashed #A2A2A2;
}

/* Hack for displaying correct width in IE */
* html a.mainlevel#active_menu
{
	width: 135px;
}

This CSS would highlight your sub menu; however, you do not have any active classes associated with the parent menu. That's definitely a (or "the") problem.

Code: Select all

a.mainlevel_current-sub#active_menu-sub {
	font-weight: bold;
}
Double-check your "Main" menu setup. Are these fields properly completed?
- Level Class
- Active Menu Class

If you want to PM the back-end access, I can take a look under the hood. That might be easier.

We solved the above problem.

Be sure to use "FLAT LIST" for your list type...not "Vertical".

Once you've setup the modules to match the attached images, you can control the highlighting using this CSS:

Code: Select all

/* Menu list container */
ul#mainlevel-main,
ul#mainlevel-sub
{
	border-top: 1px dashed  #999;
	margin-left:1px;
	padding-left: 0;
	list-style-type: none;
	font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
}

/* Menu links */
ul#mainlevel-main a,
ul#mainlevel-sub a
{
	display: block;
	padding: 5px;
	width: 150px;
	background-color: #fff;
	border-bottom: 1px dashed #999;
	text-decoration: none;
}

/* Menu links: hover state */
ul#mainlevel-main a:hover,
ul#mainlevel-sub a:hover
{
	background-color: #FF0000;
	color: #fff;
}

/*
 Active parent WITH sub item,
 Active parent WITHOUT sub item,
 Active sub item  */
ul#mainlevel-main li.mainlevel_active-main a,
ul#mainlevel-main a.mainlevel-main#active_menu-main,
ul#mainlevel-sub a.mainlevel_current-sub#active_menu-sub
{
	background-color: #FF0000;
	color: #fff;
}
Cheers,
BC

Many, MANY thanks to Bearclaws. Helped me out on email, Skype, etc. and sent me the CSS code so I could just paste it in and amend it to my requirements!  :o

What a star!  ;D

Thanks, BC, you've saved me hours of frustration and hair-tearing!

Wow, nice Topic!

Got the same problem with horizontal main und submenu...
@FluidDruid23: could you attach the final css, which work it out? Where did you placed the duplicated ext. menu modul in the templates index.php - same modulposition as first ext. menu?

Thanks, ocean11

Damn, I'm logged in but the links to the attached images don't work - just show me a page with the address on them...

Anyone got the original images?

I am beginning to strongly believe in uploading images to imageshack.us or similar rather than direct into forums these days :-\
