Article title deleted when saving

Post by neiljames54 » Sun Oct 08, 2017 11:55 am

Strange occurrence happening when I click to save any edits in an article.

1. Open an article to edit from the back end
2. Make changes
3. Save Changes
4. Article title has been deleted
5. The original article alias is ok
6. Re-enter the article title again
7. Click to save again and all is okay

This has only started to happen since 3.8, is there a known fix for this because having to re-enter the title every time I make an edit is very very annoying

Unable to replicate. Test with a fresh install see if it still happens to you.

This I cannot replicate in Joomla 3.8.1 on our own websites or our client sites.

You have some corrupt files it seems. Download this package https://downloads.joomla.org/cms/joomla ... ackage-zip and go to Joomla update, tab"upload and update" and browse to the file you just downloaded and select that zip and hit "update". Give the credentials when being asked for and say update

My install of Joomla was a brand new installation 3.8, this article title deletion problem started from this install. I have updated to 3.8.1 and still this happens.
I have been trying to seek a pattern that might cause this and find the first few article changes are fine but after a few, maybe 6 - 8 articles, I start to get the article title deletions

I agree—perhaps sympathise is a better word—with the OP that having to re-edit a topic in order to reinstate an article's subject/title would be unnnecessary; it raises questions that deserve answers. Unfortunately, like @leolam, I'm unable to reproduce the symptoms on a brand-new, "vanilla-flavoured" installation of Joomla or on a website that was created with an old version of Joomla that I've subsequently updated.

This problem deserves serious treatment and analysis because, if the problem lies with the standard Joomla installation package, there needs to be a fix for it. In order to identify the cause of the problem we need to have information about the environment in which this situation occurs so that a similar test environment can be constructed and the problem can be reproduced within it.

In order to assist the Joomla bugsquad members, therefore, the Forum Post Assistant report is a necessary first step. If we don't receive that information then we can only base our response on hearsay that, for one person in an unknown number of cases, there is a problem.

We would also need to know, to eliminate other possibilities (such as using an unofficial or "corrupt" installation package), where the installation package was downloaded from or how the installation was achieved if not via the standard installation procedure.

Back to you, Neil.

Thank you for posting the FPA report.

Hmmm ... there's a lot of "stuff"—third-party extensions, I mean—added to this Joomla website. Is there any chance you could do the following for us (to establish whether its the core Joomla software, itself, that's responsible for the mysterious first-you-see-it-now-you-don't-then-you-see-it-again-act with article titles? I wonder if you could create a brand-new, fresh-out-of-the-box, no-frills-no-added-3rd-party-extensions Joomla 3.8.2 website on the same hosting platform as this site, and verify that article titles are deleted when they're saved?

This should take less than 30 minutes to prove: 10 minutes to install J! 3.8.2 (using the standard Joomla installation package downloaded from this website), plus 20 minutes (maximum) to create a few articles and verify that the titles are "disappearing" when you've saved them.

Could you do that for us, please?

Sometimes the default front end custom Template can adversely affect backend operations.

Sozzled you say a lot of stuf added, I thought I was being very stingy with my add on's,

Admin Tools
Akeeba
JCE
Image Show
OSmap
OSmeta
Phoca Maps
Simple image Gallery

I would consider at least 6 of these to be essentials

I guess everyone has their own definitions of what's essential and I make no judgement about that. However, given that this topic was created more than 5½ weeks ago in connection with an issue that (would seem to me) to be fairly essential—the ability to save changes to a Joomla article—and it hasn't been resolved, I'm not sure what specific help you would like?

If it would help, you may get in touch with me and we could discuss the issue off-line from the forum. I'll leave it to you to decide what you want to do next.

I note, from the FPA, that you've installed a number of third-party extensions. One, or more, of these may be responsible for the problem. I'll have to leave my remarks at that. Cheers. 8)

I saved and installed the site with joomla version 3.8.2 to localhost on my system, made changes to 60+ articles with no issues.

I now use Siteground to host my site, previously used simplewebhosting, and over the space of 30 article changes I find there can be up to 3 article titles missing and annoyingly they seem to be articles with long titles.

I still have to do the new installation asked for by sozzled, and will report the findings when this has been done.

This is really important (and, as I mentioned several days ago, should only require about 30 minutes of your time).

From all accounts—I'm not personally au fait with Siteground—Siteground seems to be a reliable web hosting provider for people to create and manage their Joomla websites; after all, Siteground is a major sponsor of Joomla events around the world. What does complicate and compromise those websites, however, are the non-standard ways that people construct those sites: among other things, the choice of third-party extensions and "settings"—for want of a better term—can lead to unexpected outcomes.

In order to assure oneself that the webhosting provider is not at the centre of those considerations, the following practical guide should be followed:

1) Download the current Joomla installation package from the Joomla website. This takes a few minutes. People may be tempted to use scripted installation packages built by their webhosting providers (e.g. Softaculous, Fantastico) or "quick installation" kits included with some third-party template developers used for "demonstration purposes". These, so-called quick installation processes should be avoided, especially if there are questions about the viability of Joomla used in a particular hosted envirnonment or where the site(s), constructed in these ways, will be used in operational or business environments in the long term.

2) Upload the installation package (referred to in step 1 above) to the hosted environment; do not upload this installation kit in a sub-folder under an existing website. Create a whole new folder just for this website.

3) Create a fresh (empty) database table for the new installation with its own SQL user account having all privileges.

4) Install Joomla (I could write a few more hundred words here but the process should be clearly understood). Do not install "sample data".

5) Rename the file htaccess.txt to .htaccess.

6) Prove that you can login to both the frontend and the backend.

7) Set the SEF URL features in the Global Configuration (do not use "add .html suffix")

Thats about 10 minutes of work for steps 1-7. I know this for a fact. I've actually produced a tutorial video that proves that in real-time I was able to do all these things and I even installed Akeeba Backup within that amount of time).

So we have to wonder why, after topics like these hang around for a month or more, people can't spend 10 minutes building a test site. ???

*** Off-topic ***

@Webdongle: several reasons; it's unnecessary; it has no bearing on SEO; look around the web today and you'll find the majority of websites don't use it. Using .html suffixes may introduce other factors that could complicate reproducing or understanding the nature of the matter under discussion.

KISS- let's Keep It Simple ...

Firstly it is on topic because you gave it as an instruction to the OP. As for using (or not) .html is personal choice ... putting it in a list of instructions could be confused as necessary.

Enabling SEF URLs: see https://docs.joomla.org/Enabling_Search ... _on_Apache

See point 5 of the "step by step" relating to adding .html suffixes. Let's try to keep the instructions as simple as possible, to set up a test site in an environment that can be replicated by other people (particularly members of the Joomla bug squad) in trying to pin down whether it's the fault of the Joomla core or the fault of the OP's specific hosted environment, in establishing the OP's claims about deleting article titles.

As I wrote early in this topic, there are legitimate questions here that need to be answered. I don't know why the OP's website behaves inconsistently and I'd like to get to the heart of the matter. I suspect that the cause may be due to combination of factors—a mix of third-party extensions, folklore about what should be contained in the .htaccess file, and other Joomla settings—but it's also just as possible that if someone attempts to change an article title to something more than 255 characters then things could also fall apart.

I just don't know.

My purpose in involving myself with this topic was to assure myself and other users of Joomla that there is nothing untoward or worrying about the Joomla core. For that reason, and for that reason alone, this topic held my attention (for a certain amount of time) but without proof of a problem—and none of us can reproduce the symptoms that have been claimed in the opening post—I feel satisfied that there isn't a problem as far as the community is concerned.

In summary:

1) This issue affects one person in a unknown/unquantified number of situations;
2) There is a "lot of stuff" used in the OP's environment (irrespective of whether the OP considers such "stuff" to be essential or otherwise);
3) We don't know how the website was created;
4) The OP is unable (or uncommitted) to engage with the community to progress the matter earnestly.

I've discussed this issue privately with another member of the community and we have regrettably concluded that we've read more excuses about why it's taking 6+ weeks to get some traction on the matter than we've seen information that may help the community at large.

I have nothing further to add to this topic.

Clean install Joomla 3.8.2 and uninstalled all plugins, replaced with fresh new files from developers sites and so far no more issues

Suggest that you now update to J! 3.8.3. Good to hear that the issue has been resolved.
