Too many number of guests online
I just updated to version 8.3.4 and I noticed that there are too many guests online on my site – from 90+ to 4,000+. That's way too many guests online at the same time. Any thoughts on these? Thanks.

Yes, for me too. Currently it says 32723 (!) visitors on-line, although I believe there might be maybe 10-20 visitors.
Here's the message I received after the update - maybe it has something to do with it?
Please help!

Re: Problem after updating to 3.8.4.
My two cents.....what "visits" module or plugin is being referred to:
In Administrator using ISIS on 3.8.4, I have "0" visitors and 1 administrator. I didn't get that SQL error (updated 3.8.3 > 3.8.4 Wednesdady 31/1/2018.
I'm not using any such visit counter / logged in user module on front-end. I can't seem to find such a module in the core system either.
Maybe it's a Super Blue Blood moon curse!

Hi,
I get the visitor numbers from the Kunena forum component and I also have a custom Joomla module. Both counters are showing similar (very high) numbers.

I can't find have any "Who's Online" (core) module and don't use K2.
The only visitor stats are as per the above screenshot (Visitors: 1, Administrator: 1 since I've logged into the front end site) in the footer of ISIS template.
It's not misrepresenting visitor numbers.

These guests should be robots, so you can ban them in robot.txt

@madifor It is likely causes by some routing changes in 3.8.4. There is a PR which reverts these changes. If you have time, please test this one https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/pull/19512 and report the result back so that it can get merged

Re: Problem after updating to 3.8.4.
The Who's Online module (and variants of the mechanism used by other extension developers) has been problematic going back all the way to J! 1.5. The visitor numbers have always been unreliable; I don't use it on any of my websites for that reason.
As the discussion on GitHub shows, while some improvements can be achieved, there's a trade-off between obtaining a more accurate picture of the numbers and a penalty in site performance as a result.

Re: Problem after updating to 3.8.4.
The theory and the act are two different things. I confirm that the bug with too many guests after joomla 3.8.4 is exist. I have a joomla website that i use it and i was never had too many guests that it shows now.sozzled wrote:The Who's Online module (and variants of the mechanism used by other extension developers) has been problematic going back all the way to J! 1.5. Re: Problem after updating to 3.8.4.
I agree with you, @ribo. It would seem that, while the problem has been around for years and may not have been noticed as much, the problem has worsened with the release of J! 3.8.4 and that's why we're having this discussion today. That's all I can say on the matter.

Re: Too many number of guests online
Also with this fix https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/pull/19514/files fixes the issue that shows too many users that are online in backend. After the fix of this file all the users that get in backend must logout and after must login to see that this fixes the issue

GUEST OPTION not Good works.
The "guest" option shows me in the module on the website a large number of guests, too big in my opinion. Before the upgrade to 3.8.4 it was ok. Now something has been blocked after the upgrade.

Re: Too many number of guests online
I see that 3.8.5 has just been released as I write this but for those applying the fix
https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/pull/19514/files
to Joomla 3.8.4 this bug fixes an issue of not deleting expired sessions. This means once you apply the fix you will need to delete those old expired sessions. The easiest way to do this is to switch Session Handler in the Joomla Global Configuration hit save and then switch it back if you want. You should also delete your cache as well incase you cache the module.

Yes, Delete sessions or off system cache. Not fix. Joomla from version to version, getting worse.

No, in 3.8.3 not a problem. After upgrading to 3.8.4 it is all the time.sozzled wrote:Are you using an intermediate/proxy cache or CDN?
