Problem with Joomla 3.8.8 and PHP 7.2.5

Upgraded this morning to 3.8.8 and also changed from PHP 7.1.17 to 7.2.5. This afternoon the site was very slow with seconds to load a page. I reverted to PHP 7.1 and then it was fast. A Kunena page that loaded in 3 sec in PHP 7.2.5 took only 0,3 sec for PHP 7.1.17.

Has anyone else seen this? I thought PHP 7.2 would be 10 % faster and not 10 times slower.

Install Joomla in another folder and see if that runs slow when you change php. Chances are it is a 3rd party extension causing the problem. viewtopic.php?f=714&t=793531 please

I looked in php error pages for PHP 7.1 and Kide Shoutbox Lite gave an enormous amount of error messages like 50 MB for 6 hours. AriQuiz Lite gave also many error messages. I substituted them both and memory consumption went down from 800 MB to 200-300 MB.

However, when using PHP 7.2 additional extensions seems to produce errors like JComments and thus slow down, so I will wait a little with PHP 7.2 for updates.

@Webdongle.....that does not matter. Michael is simply stating facts on mcrypt and OP states using PHP7.2 so again that other users are not on 7.2 is irrelevant so Michael is 100% right and FPA should be adjusted

Well aware of that. We can make the FPA "smarter". If you notice, core doesn't allow you to configure cache engines, database servers, or session handlers that your environment doesn't support. So using a similar approach, the FPA should be able to say "oh, this is being run on PHP 7.2+, don't warn about mcrypt being missing" (similar for the deprecated mysql extension on PHP 7.0+).

Thanks for your suggestions! I have also decreased maximal execution time of 300 seconds to 30 seconds, which decreased overload. I have removed JComments and substituted it with CComments. Some wonder how I made changes to PHP settings.

At the top of .htacess I put this:
php_value max_execution_time 30
php_value post_max_size 16M
php_value upload_max_filesize 16M
php_flag open_basedir off

I am now using PHP 7.2 and it works very well. Probably because I removed extensions that was to old and not compliant with PHP 7.1 and 7.2. I also use opcache in PHP to speed up script running. I recommend you a host with DirectAdmin, because you can fine tune PHP settings and check error logs. It is very easy to make a backup and you dont need Akeeba Backup. It is just to order a backup and then you get mail when its ready and you can download a copy.

I cannot comment on J! 3.8.8 and PHP 7.2 because I do not have any websites running J! 3.8.8. It is quite possible, though, that extensions for J! 3.x may not be compatible with PHP 7.2 and their use could adversely affect site performance.

It would help, when people write that they're getting error messages with some J! extensions (e.g. JComments) if they would include the text of those error messages and, perhaps we could discuss how to address those problems.

The discussion was side-tracked a little over issues relating to FPA 1.3.9 and how it reported the settings for some PHP extensions, e.g. mcrypt(). I tested FPA 1.4.3 a few moments ago and I can confirm that

a) I am not able to modify my PHP settings to enable or disable mcrypt(); and

b) FPA 1.4.3 quite happily displays mcrypt() in green text ("indicating" that I have no issues(?) with it); as @mbabker would probably agree, this is irrelevant in the circumstances.

Even so, @mbabker's comments about how the FPA report generator should be intelligent enough to determine that a website using PHP 7.2 shouldn't report on certain PHP modules being present or not, it would help if these matters were brought to the early attention of the FPA development team. I will do that for him.

As far as the specific matters about J! 3.x performance and PHP 7.2 are concerned, I haven't noticed a great deal of difference in comparison with any other version of PHP that I can use. I would note that, where extensions are installed that are not compliant with PHP 7 (and their use results in errors) then this would slow things down.

I have no views about merits of JComments compared to CComments; I've used them both. JComments is not actively maintained whereas CComments is. There are several issues with JComments that have been addressed (including the replacement of the original developer's proprietary CAPTCHA with [Google's] reCAPTCHA) but, whether those issues will be address by the volunteer who's made his own contributions to the source code, those are separate. The original developer of JComments seems to have abandoned his project.

There is one error (that I'm aware of) relating to JComments and PHP 7.2:

I haven't figured out how to deal with it, yet, but it's not a show stopper; the PHP interpreter logs an error (to the file error_log) whenever someone visits a page that uses that component but I can't say if that's a significant impact on performance. (BTW, my own Kunena forum pages—on those sites where I use it—load in around half a second).
