Hide menu item for Authors and above?

Post by seanos » Thu Feb 28, 2019 5:47 am

I’ve seen a few requests for help doing something similar, but all for earlier versions of Joomla or slightly different scenarios.

The site will have public content and member-only content. Members are added to the Author group. I have a menu item pointing to a Join (become a member) page. How can I make that menu item only appear to Public, Guest and Registered?

Accessibility is selected from the list (access) on the right side of the form. You can create new user groups in User->User Levels.

I know both those things, but it doesn’t seem to prevent users with *higher* access from seeing the menu.

Include only Guest and Registered groups.

Correct me if I am wrong but I don't think that is how ACL operates. Public, Guest and Registered are below the Author group so why wouldn't the Author group not be able to see it?

Maybe try copying the registered group calling it members and assigning different view privileges.

ACL Manager is a helpful extension for this.

Author is not a child of Guest so setting level to guest would hide it from Author. But Author is a child of Registered so my previous answer won't work (it would work with Administrators and Super Users though).

Create a group for registered non-members and make it a child of Registered.
Set it as "New User Registration Group" in Users component configuration.
Create an Access Level containing this group and Guest group.

If you have any registered non-members, move them to this group. Newly registered users will be automatically assigned to this group.

Thank you! That definitely works.

Hopefully it won’t trip up some other component.
