My Joomla sites suddenly got unwanted languages

Post by gaatec » Wed Apr 03, 2019 5:55 pm

Hi there,
I have lately noticed that several of my Joomla installation suddenly have got "unwanted languages" installed.

I am not sure when this started, but during recent updates, I suddenly noticed that Joomla "Extensions: Update" notified me that there were updates available for languages that I weren't aware was installed.

I therefore checked and found that my Joomla site had unwanted languages installed (both frontend and backend languages).

I noticed that languages like Georgia, Greece, Ukrainian, etc. were installed.

I have seen this happen on a dozen of my sites lately.

I am quite sure that the sites in question have not been hacked due to my strict security measures.

Any ideas?

First things first (on all the affected websites):

1) Uninstall the languages that you don't need.
2) Disable the two plugins that relate to languages. These are System - Language Code and System - Language Code.
3) Change the password for the superuser account.
4) Enable the plugin System - User Actions Log so that you can see who is logging into your website (and when) and what changes are being made.

Chances are that you did not create these websites using the Joomla installation package but, instead, you used some scripted tool provided by your webhosting provider or you used some "demo package" included with a template. That would explain why other sites were affected in a similar way.

Hope that helps.

Aha!!
So it's not just me! :)
Please see viewtopic.php?f=706&t=970531

All my sites were made from clean installs. No-one else had ever logged in. All sites are registered with MyJoomla and they are not hacked. Removing these language packs is no problem, but I still don't know how they got there in the first place.

And I still think the only thing I was doing around the time these language packs were installed, was updating the sites to Joomla 3.9.2 .
@Gaatec, could you check the installation date on your unwanted language packs?

The only language files contained in the 3.9.2 update packages are en-GB.

Hi Toivo,
Thanks, I'm sure you are right...
But do you have any idea where these packs came from, then?
Now that I am no longer the only one in the world who is seeing this, surely there must be some Joomla-related explanation?

I'm quoting Gaatec, because I hope he will come back to this thread, even though he seems to have other language packs showing up than I had.

cheers,
j.
