Changed session handler to PHP, but _session keeps populating

Can anyone help me understand why my _session table fill up even though my handler is PHP in Global Config? I am seeing this happen for guests visiting and users logged in for several sites running the below versions. Is this being overwritten by a setting from another application in Joomla?

Joomla! 3.9.6 Stable
PHP 7.2.14
MySQL 5.7.25

Suggest that you temporarily, at least, disable all server-side caching, clear all server, browser and proxy caches (the last-mentioned, if applicable). Possibly consider using SQL TRUNCATE command on the _sessions table.

Done. I am not using cache, I can try the truncate later tomorrow. Can you explain the proxy cache? Thanks

? Doesn't none mean PHP? If so it's right...

@gws: "none" is the value Joomla writes to configuration.php when PHP session handler is selected. FPA only reports what it finds.

@urzh: did you TRUNCATE the _session table? What is your "major issue"?

@sozzled hi...yes, I did this on one DB. It cleared the rows but still the _sessions table is filling up when registered or guest visits the site.

My major issue I believe is related to this: viewtopic.php?f=708&t=971939

Sorry. My PC crashed and I've spent the past 36 hours rebuilding it. I won't be much help to anyone for another few days.

My guess (and I'm taking a wild guess) is that there's some kind of caching involved here ... but I don't know what it is.

@sozzled thanks. One thing I am noticing, I was playing around with table_open_cache = 400 in my.cnf. Seems after I reduced this size from 800 to 400, I am not seeing the errors anymore reported here:
