Can you test it with another browser?
Do you have any JavaScript errors on the page?
Could you use Forum Post Assistant to give more info about your setup?

Re: Cannot save/edit articles
Do you have the problem also with a other backend template?
Your permisions are all 777 and that is not good! It must be a maximum of 755

Re: Cannot save/edit articles
You're using an out of date and unsupported joomla version for starters (2.5.4 should be 2.5.28 for the 2.5.x series). But better yet, get stuck into 3.9.11.
Your articles are not on the hosting hard drive, they are in your database.
Joomla 2.5 ended of life was 8 years ago.

Re: Cannot save/edit articles
I know, we will upgrade the website soon, but as I understood it is too complicated to migrate to joomla 3 with all these old extensions and we will be better with a new website, which I am working... on but it is high season for our clients subscriptions now and I can't have the website down for the next weeks, so I needed a solution in between

Re: Cannot save/edit articles
I don't normally look at discussions about outdated versions of J!. In this case, however, the OP has implied that the matter is important and, for that reason only, I would like to make a few comments.
1) J! 2.5.4 was released on 2-Apr-2012. That's over seven years (or ninety-seven versions) ago. So, if there are problems with maintaining this website now, what would anyone expect?
2) It's true that support for J! 2.5 ceased (with the release of J! 2.5.28) on 31-Dec-2014; that's nearly five years ago. Again, a failure to maintain J! by keeping it updated is one of the main reasons that website owners find themselves having problems today.
3) PHP 5.4.45 was released on 3-Sep-2015. This version of PHP is no longer supported. See also the following table:
4) The extension eXtplorer has had a chequered history and has been the cause of successful hacking of J! websites in the past.
5) No doubt, allowing unfiltered access to website folders (i.e. permissions of 777), is extremely risky and does lead to malicious activity that will compromise the site owner's ability to keep their web assets safe.
6)
I believe the questions asked by the OP are too complicated to be resolved here in this forum. While it may be possible to update the contents of articles stored in the database (by using phpMyAdmin, for example) these techniques should only be employed (a) by a skilled professional and (b) as a last resort or "quick fix".
If the OP really wants these issues properly resolved, and if it's important to their business, then they need to allocate resources to address the matters. My suggestion is that the OP should employ a professional web developer to work with them; that's not going to come without paying time and allowing time for those activities to be done.
In summary, sorry, but, no, the website is not in a state that will permit the OP to remedy their problems by themselves. It's entirely a matter of choice whether they deal with those problems or accept (for the time being) that they cannot edit and save changes to the articles they want to display on their site.
