Looking for Link Preview for External Links

Post by awoolbert » Fri Mar 20, 2020 9:37 pm

Trying to find and extension of plug-in that can grab info off an external link and show a preview. Tried Super Link Preview but it fails and I don't have a lot of time. We are putting together a CV19 emergency county site.

Anybody have a way to do this slick and easy? Basically I want to put a link in an article and it can pull what it needs to show the Title, graphic and a little text.

Thanks,

You could do the basic "pop-up" preview thing with https://extensions.joomla.org/extension ... /tooltips/, however it would be manual work to produce the thumbnail and insert the short text about the site. It wouldn't fetch the information from the site automatically.

Easiest (out-of-the-box) solution if the source information produces information as a valid RSS feed, is to use the Newsfeeds component in J!. See documentation here: https://docs.joomla.org/Help39:Componen ... eeds_Feeds

Most of these sites don't have an RSS. This is like deep barely able to use a computer land in these govt.

Did you try ShrinktheWeb? There is a joomla plugin for it https://extensions.joomla.org/extension ... inktheweb/

Brian's idea may have some worth.

This is surprising!

The Dept. Health (where I live) produces a newsfeed in RSS format. Even the UK Dept. Health has a newsfeed (in atom format), at https://www.gov.uk/government/organisat ... -care.atom

It all depends on where you look and how hard you look for the information.

As a demonstration, I created a newsfeed menu item using the UK Dept. Health as the source and this is how the page renders (see the screenshot below). It may not be everything that one might want but, in my opinion, in these uncertain times when spreading misinformation is worse that relying on official information, a news feed is not a bad idea.
