The test email button does nothing on PHP, Sendmail or SMTP
The contact us page form goes blank when you submit the form?

Any ideas? I'm no expert but I've run out of ideas. I've tried different forms but they do the same, it points back to the server not sending the emails and if the test email doesn't work then the form can't?

I uploaded and ran a test.php file and got "message accepted" and received the test email.
So it must be something in Joomla, global config seems fine, where can I look now?
When I enable debug I get a "parsing errors in language files" and JROOT/administrator/language/en-GB/en-GB.com_spsimpleportfolio.sys.ini : error(s) in line(s) 37
which is public $list_limit = '20';
No additional errors after clicking email test button?

Is the extension SP Simple Portfolio uptodate? The latest version at the JoomShaper website is 2.0.1.

I updated SP Simple Portfolio to the latest version, no change, not sure how this would have helped?
Enabled registration with email confirmation, created menu register item, same issue, page goes blank and no emails are sent... User was added.

Hi. Check the spam folder.
In addition, for reliable sending email from the site, you should use a domain mail. And you need to set up an email domain on hosting. Take a look into the documentation of your hosting provider, it should be there.

In Joomla there is nothing that would prevent sending email. All fields in the settings must be filled, such as From Email, From Name are critical important.

Also, check the IP of your site for the presence in antispam databases. Very frequent phenomenon when IP was discredited by previous owners.

You must have looked in the wrong file. $list_limit is located in configuration.php and not in a language file.

I am using the same SMTP mail settings that work from Thunderbird

A blank page is displayed when a PHP fatal error is displayed, if PHP errors are filtered. Change the level of error reporting in Global Configuration to 'Maximum' and the website should display error messages. Copy and paste the messages here into a reply for advice.

Which method does your host recommend? Hosts often allow only their own SMTP server to be used.

I am using the same SMTP mail settings that work from Thunderbird.

The mail settings from a mail client do not necessarily work when a web server sends outgoing mail to a mail server, to be forwarded to a receiving mail server.

The following example shows one case where the mail client settings need to be amended before emails can be sent from a web server, assuming that your host allows SMTP connections to an external mail server:

Joomla uses the PHPMailer library for sending emails or forwarding them to an SMTP server. Joomla emails, including the test email button, work well, as long as the settings in Global Configuration - Server - Mail Settings are correct.

The following instructions show how to get a listing of all the SMTP requests and responses between Joomla and the SMTP server, whether the SMTP server is internal to the host network or external. The detailed, low level transaction log shows what goes on during the opening of the SMTP connection. You can then get your hosting provider to resolve any connectivity issues.

Go to Extensions - Plugins and configure the system plugin 'System - Debug' with the following settings, which limit the debug output to Super User sessions only:

• Allowed Groups: Super Users

• Log Priorities: All

• Log Categories: mail

• Log Almost Everything

In Global Configuration turn on the debug option in System - Debug Settings - Debug System.
Then go to Server - Mail Settings and click the button Send Test Mail.

The test result, success or failure, will then get displayed as a system message. Download the detailed log file 'everything.php' from the Joomla log folder, usually administrator/logs, or, if your site was installed much earlier, from the /logs folder in the main Joomla folder.

Post the relevant lines with SMTP codes from the log file here for advice if needed. In any case, let us know how it went.

That is unusual. Did you follow the instructions how to log the email messages at the SMTP protocol level?

Which mail options are you using? Did you try to use SMTP and Gmail as the server? Gmail works all right, as long as your host allows the web server to connect to an external mail server.

Submitting the contact form gives :

Was the contact form created by using the standard Joomla contact component, Components - Contacts, or some third party extension?

The messages you posted have nothing to do with email. According to those messages, SP Page Builder cannot find a particular page.

It sounds like you can only use 'PHP Mail' as the mailer in Global Configuration. Still, the test mail should give some results.

How was your Joomla 3.9.28 installed - by downloading the package from https://downloads.joomla.org or by some other method?

Hi there,
I didn't do the initial install.
I tried downloading the FPA again and reinstalling it but:-
As a security measure, this copy of FPA has been self-deleted due to the time it has been present on the server.
You will need to upload another copy of FPA to continue.

I tried installing an earlier version with the same result.

Yes, the test mail button doesn't do anything in PHP or SMTP, but a PHP testmail.php file sends the email from the server?

The PHP script testmail.php uses the mail() function, which relies on the Sendmail or a similar Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) installed in the web server, in which case the Mailer selection 'PHP Mail' should work in Joomla 3.x.

When you select 'PHP Mail' as the Mailer in Global Configuration and then press the Send Test Mail, does Joomla display any messages like 'Notice - Could not instantiate mail function' and 'Error - Test mail could not be sent' or any other messages? Also, if you followed the detailed instructions given above how to configure the plugin System - Debug and turn on the Debug mode before pressing Send Test Mail, the log file everything.php normally contains at least some messages originating from the failed test.

If that does not help, talk to the support team of your host and find out which mail server they require or allow their web servers to use.

Tried all that, no errors or messages at all with Test Mail, host supports PHP and SMTP. Printout I sent was with debug switched on, tried a test mail and submitting from the form. Should I try updating to version 4? I inherited the site from someone who wasn't happy handing it over, could they have done anything?

You could run Joomla! Update again with 3.9.28 and refresh the system files to see if that makes a difference.
